Anybody on the boards not into gaming at all?

Used to spend most my days online gaming. Don't think i've gamed for over 3 years now. Sold my xbox360 as well.

Just seem to get bored too quickly now :o

I hate it when people say playing games is a waste of time. It's a hobby, and you partake in a hobby to have fun. If people have fun playing games then they haven't wasted hours of their lives.

Ah, but books are different. Books have the power to change the way you think; give you a completely different perspective on life. Very few games, films, media, etc can do this. I'm not sure why but that is the case. Probably because most forms of media aim to entertain rather than educate.

(Examples include the Bible, War and Peace, 1984, etc)

Unless you think developing your mind is fundamentally "useless" in which case I'd call you a closet nihilist.

There was a thread recently in the PC games section, where pc gamers found the genetic code for aids or something along those lines, thats pretty useful? and that came from a browser based game.

While it is a hobby, I would say it is not an overly constructive one compared to playing an instrument or sport.

I used to be well into it all, CS:S, BF2 etc. Plus got a PS3. Now I just can't be bothered at all with any of it. I am in my mid 30s so it was bound to happen!! :)

I wouldn't say games are a waste of time, but I would say you retain a lot less from them. For instance, I can remember almost every book I've read over the last ten years (or most facets of them) but I can't necessarily recall elements of games I've played - that said, when a new FM comes out I generally lock myself away from society for a couple of weeks - and am extremely content in doing this!

I have just counted all the consoles I own and the grand total is 15 never bothered counting before.

Lol @ the comparison with stamp collecting. Stamp collecting's generally ridiculed, so being better than it is hardly a ringing endorsement!

I only play a bit of Fifa, but don't own a Playstation. I don't even know anyone with a console, here!

ringing endorsement ? It was said in jest ...

There will come a time when gaming will become the norm for a hobby. It's like an interactive book/film. In some games you can even change the outcome.
Traditional hobbies and gaming both have their own unqiue merits.

Edit:

Yeah I get bored of games much more easily these days but I don't know if thats because games are becoming less intuitive or the fact that I had played wow for 3 years or the fact that I'm getting older :P

after wasting my early teens racking up 500 days playtime on runescape its safe to say ive not played a game since

After wow I've not touched an mmo since. Don't have the time for it to be honest. At least to play the way I would like to, which is competitive.

My addiction to BF2 rinced out any gaming left in me, All I do now is fire up the PS3 for half hour or so & that's only a couple of times a week.

I spend more time reading and writing about games then I do playing them. They should not be dismissed when compared against other forms of entertainment (reading non fiction is more educational though)

Sorry it wasn't meant to be an attack on gaming as a hobby, I have no issue with those who do. The problem is for me personally, despite being totally hardcore a few years ago cs/css competitive level and also wasting tons of time on wow, I basically never play games.

I just get hooked on 'progression' or something it seems i.e. I must unlock that to see what its like, after 5 seconds of new unlock, I'm bored again. Then I feel guilty for having wasted the last few hours playing games and doing nothing I perceive as 'useful.'

Now I'd consider reading a book more useful than those hours wasted on gears as I read non-fiction (personal development, nutrition, programming languages, finance) - I learn new things from these which can be applied to my work/lifestyle/whatever for the better. Hell even non-fiction I will improve my reading skills and potentially vocabulary which spills over into everything.

Now with not gaming and an alternative. As I work in the middle of nowhere and doing long distance from my gf, I can be stuck for something to do at times. Others in the house go on the lash, watch tv etc which i'm not the most keen on (middle of rugger season/don't like sitting on my butt.) Now if I do extra work, I feel like I'm working my nuts off for little money and think Im being an idiot for spending all of my time working (work to live, not the other way round.)

From reading the above it seems like others are in a similar situation to me, so what do you do?
