Anyone Been on a Train Recently?

Complaining about the seat quality and the missing buffet service whilst us long term commuters dream of getting any seat during peak time travel, and pay thousands annually to be constantly let down by the poor service.
It's a bit like complaining that Jimmy Savile smoked too much.
I feel your pain - I was once a regular commuter from Worthing to Victoria when Connex operated that route.

<shudder>

There wasn't always a refreshment service on all trains, I remember the timetables used to have a little symbol on it indicating if they did or not.
They've been taken out on my routes, both the trolley service (which to be fair would struggle to get through anyway) and also the bar. I always felt it was a bit weird having a bar on a train tbh.
I guess I’m just thinking of inter city express services here.

Used to quite enjoy joining the throng at the buffet bar on the Friday return journey back to the South West

Well here it is then, meet Gittins Gal, from 2014.

I'll dig out more when I can be arsed.

I travel between Aberdeen and London on LNER Azuma first class and it's a pleasure. The quality of the food has gone way down, though.

I had to get the Azuma from Lincoln to Grantham to pick up my car earlier this year. £4 single, £8 first class with a Forces railcard.

Naturally, I went for the first class ticket and had just enough time to get my complimentary breakfast pastry and drink before I had to get off again. At normal train prices, these would’ve cost more than the ticket…

Not recently in Blighty.

In Finland though, booked a cabin (couple of seats with a table and closeable doors) for about €40. For two. For an hour and a half ride. And it was on time. And clean.

Didn't use the buffet service and skipped a trip to the restaurant car.

Guess there's an upside to a state run service.

Crosscountry trains are probably the worst of the "long haul" operators. Old, dirty, noisy (I believe all of their rolling stock is still diesel rather than the rather nice newer electric fleet of LNER).
I rarely go on trains, maybe couple of times a year locally, but a few months ago went had to travel to a conference up north so had 4+ hr journey on the Crosscountry train. It was awful. Going to go via London next time and up.

If you don't book way in advance, even relatively short journeys can be very expensive in the UK.

My company would regularly book me Nottingham to Euston and struggle to stay under our £150 daily travel cap, and that was five years ago.

Nah, not so much now you can get some advance purchase tickets literally up to minutes before you travel, although I believe that is being pushed back to 1 hour soon. If you are travelling in to London peak time with zero notice then you might pay quite a bit more.

I hate trains. I don't take them if I can help it. It's been years and years since I've been on a train. And the time was horrendous

Looks like Nottingham to Euston is basically the same, a little more, than when I used to use it so I'm not so sure about that!

Bear in mind this is one way.
