I've done it.

Go to a solicitor with your passport ss proof of ID they'll type up an official change of name deed and sign it.

That document is your proof and you use that to get new passport/bank details, etc.
This is what I did when I got rid of my father's name after my parents divorce. I didn't want to keep his name so I got rid of it and the middle name 'Allister' which was a way of getting my Mum's maiden name into my name was photoshopped  and became 'Lister', my new last name. I also formalised my first name change, I was born Matthew but at lower school there were 3 Matthew's in the class. This quickly got annoying so I became 'Marc'.

Marc came about because my maternal grandmother wanted me to be called Marc and not Matthew; also my full name at birth was 'Matthew Allister Russell Caldwell' which makes MARC. So I became 'Marc Russell Lister'.

If you were to change your name would you have to change your certificates aswel(A Levels, GCSE, Diploma, etc.?) That would be a real hassle right?

Btw I'm not thinking of changing my name but have always wondered.
You don't have to. I changed my name at 18 years old having already gotten my GCSE certificates. My exams officer said it'd look weird having GCSE's in one name and A-levels in another so I didn't bother getting those changed.

I used to call a guy at uni Dave, Dave Lister.

SiriusB
 That's me isn't it? :D Best nickname ever, I once was called 'Bumblebee' because of a yellow and black jacket I once had. Something Sting and I have in common.;)

Incidentally Richard Clarkson at Uni also calls me Dave, for the same reason as you SiriusB.

My nickname used to be dumpling.

It wasn't because I was fat; it was because I used to sit next to faggots!

Ba-dum-TISH!!

Is it really a fiver to change your name?

Is it like choosing a user name, you have to pick something that hasnt been taken yet? I feel a 'things to do before I turn thirty two' moment coming on!

I can't remember how much I paid the solicitors for my legal declaration but it wasn't much.

As for changing your name to something that hasn't been taken yet, what do you mean? As in no-one else in the country has taken that name? You can choose whatever you want.

My mate changed his name to Ebaneezer Good.... you know off the song eezer good eezer good he's ebanezer good.

He has the documents and everything but has not told his family and still using his cards etc under his original name lol

Cut me in half and count the rings bebeh! Cheeky sod.

All my friends call me Will but my family still call me William - that is afterall my name. Will is not a stand alone name just an abbreviation. I'm quite happy with being Will or William. I respond to either.

Gilly has a special name for me. And I for him. ;)

Well my full name is Mark Antoni Robert Koszler, which causes most people a few problems ;) They always spell Antoni as Anthony and there have been so many variations in my sirname I have lost count.
