Had my first track experience day recently and drove a Turbo and a Cayman. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and admittedly being naive when it comes to high performance cars I was surprised. Even in 6th gear it would go like a bloody rocket from about 2,000rpm. The Cayman needed to be rev'd hard to get the performance, the Turbo was absolutely and utterly savage.

I'd be really interested to hear from people who have driven the other elite Porsches (GT2/GT3/GT3 RS) how they compare. I'd imagine the GT3 drives similar to the Cayman and the GT2 is just outright ridiculous.

I wasn't really that impressed by the Cayman. The only other high performance car I drive on a regular basis is an E90 330d which would have course feel quick because of the torque. Also had a passenger lap in the Mazda 3 MPS which covered ground quickly, gave a greater sense of acceleration than the Cayman despite being slower on paper.

Anyway great experience and I can no longer talk about supercars with pure ignorance :D

Guessing this was at Thruxton? I didnt rate the Caymen either but the F430 was awesome!

Indeed. I also couldn't believe they had a brand new Lamborghini LP670-4 Superveloce!!!! Might have to go back for a spin in that :D

Wasn't available when I booked and I've always wanted to drive the Turbo.

My brother did four laps in the 911 Turbo but said it had a rev limiter at 5000rpm? Pretty pants when it cost and extra £150 for 4 laps.

I did four laps in the Lamborghini Murciélago LP640, but still prefered the F430.

I'd have loved to have done the Thrill option where you get to drive all three but it was too expensive... even with the Tesco clubcard vouchers :D

Still an awesome afternoon though.

The rev limiters are in the single man Renault racing cars, my instructor said the Turbo didn't have any sort of limiter. He was pretty strict about it given it was chucking it down with rain but tbh i was blown away from about 3,000rpm upwards anyway.

I do think the experience would be much better if your instructor did a fast lap in the car as well to show you what it's capable of.

My Girlfriend got me it for my birthday. Needless to say, she is a keeper.:p

If I'd booked the LP640 and they said on the day they'd got rid of it and replaced it with the SV I probably would have passed out in excitement :D

The thing is the Turbo seems to be subtle. From the front it looks like any other Porsche. Is that a good or a bad thing? Should the styling be more aggressive, after all you're average 911 is nothing special but the Turbo is a monster.

From my experience, people who don't know much about cars don't appreciate Porsches because they are prevalent on the roads. Most people wouldn't tell a 911 Turbo apart from any other model. The 911 Turbo is a true super car relative to the other models. It'd be like an M3 looking identical to a 335i. My point is should the Turbo have more aggressive and unique styling? 911 models don't generally turn heads, their competitors do.

Also to put my quote in context I was speaking purely performance wise.

And you dont think 0-60 in 4.6 and 182mph is special?

I'd say it's impressive. I'd also say there are superior cars available for the same price and I'd also say that it's not on par with the elite supercars in terms of performance. The average 911 seems to me a midway point between a high performance car and a supercar. The Turbo is a supercar, a subtle one.
