Anyone else disappointed with progression of Car Interiors?

A touch screen screen is worse than a control interface like i-Drive. It's alomst impossible to drive and touch the screen in the correct place on UK roads.

On your Mercedes E Class and BMW 5 Series comparison - you're comparing a 7 year old 5 Series design to the latest release from Mercedes; so probably not a fair comparison :)

For contrast, here is the Mercedes equivalent to the F10 5 Series. This is a 2015 car I rented last year...

It was like being in a time warp

Cadillac Escalade:
Probably my favourite so far that I have test drove. Offers absolutely everything when it comes to technology. Not sure I want to spend that much though. Exterior looks identical to Tahoe and Yukon, but quite a lot more money.

This is not a Cadillac Escalade it is a Cadillac CTS, a completely different type of car.

If you can't even remember what these interiors looked like enough to be able to find pictures of them on Google I'm not sure how how much credibility we should give your view on them :p

Touch screens in cars are idiotic - at least when there isn't a more tactile means of controlling things. They are nice to have - but useless when you're actually driving without an alternative means of controlling things.

Buttons, especially ones on stalks, are the future.

100% this. My Golf has the old school radio buttons rather than a touch screen and I far prefer it. I can use it without taking my eyes of the road.

haha just noticed that. I had about 20 tabs open and tried to keep everything similar size and color. How I didn't see the missing giant stalk shifter (yawn!) I don't know.

Is the BMX X5 similar Fox?

The X5 is based on the 5 Series, so the interior is quite 5 Series-like but has a few of the newer design cues like the sticky-up screen.

EU regs now say everything has to be easily recyclable, which is why interior plastics etc are feeling cheaper than they used to :(

Jag? Poor infotainment UI compared to the 5-Series etc. but looks nice and is a nice place to be. Is touchscreen at least which seems to be something you want.

I saw the F-Pace the other day and thought it looked really nice. Few people had negative things to say but probably nit picking.
Only trouble is, this would be a car for my wife as it's not big enough for what I want. Ideally want 7-seater with captain seats in the 2nd row.

Range Rover Sport? 7 seats, touchscreen, lack of buttons.

I think thats a prime example of an interior thats nothing like as good as it should be given the high price of the car. Plain styling and electronics that look like they were outsourced to Dynavin.

i feel for the op if he ever has to drive a ford ka.

tbh the lower end cars interiors are getting worse, seats are massively uncomfortable and the quality just isnt there.

the only "run of the mill" cars i've ever been in that have comfy seats are french, kind of a shame.

infotainment is a tricky subject for cars, as they're running 2-3 years behind the curve, and remember the key point for a car screen is longevity and toughness rather than colour quality and pixel density. i'd rather manufacturers stuck to making things more easily aftermarket upgradable (din sockets, standardising steering wheel control communication etc) than trying to cram everything in.

lets face it, you only ever want 3 things from an infotainment system:
-music bluetoothed from your phone (linked to siri/google app for voice control and steering wheel controls for track skipping)
-satnav
-the ability to recieve calls, or use voice control to make calls

anything more is just a massive distraction and frankly dangerous
