Anyone else getting miffed off with DLC ?

I'm ok with the principle of DLC. Games' "real" price is probably £80 or so. If you pay less than that but get some content chopped off, leaving you with a "core" game, that's fine by me - some of us really don't care for multiplayer or skins.

New games were £45 20 years ago. It's crazy to be still paying that now

Where it bothers me is where it might affect the core game. Such as increasing the grind (e.g. in Forza to encourage you to buy the rare cars with real cash), or leaving tantalising open story arcs which require further purchase to explore (less bothered by this, to be honest).

I'm one of the few who though the Killer Instinct model was great. Pay different levels based on customizable game content dependent on what content you value.

I don't mind buying DLC when it's done right to be honest.

season passes I was guilty of, but after being burnt by years of them on CoD I don't bother with them now, I want to know what content I'm getting first and im not blindly throwing money at content I have no idea what it is.

Preorder dlc is frustrating and makes buying a game exceedingly difficult, the worst offender has to have been watch dogs for this. Not that I preorder anymore, but this practice needs to stop.

I refuse to download expansion packs for extra missions etc.

I am so glad DLC for GTA V is free. The only DLC I buy are songs for RockSmith or silly things like weapons or costume packs for Tomb Raider.

You'll be in for a shock when the dlc comes for GTA V then and you have to buy it.

I Don't tend to buy much DLC but this is the reason I stopped buying COD after MW3. I just didn't want to be buying all the map packs and the game is set up so you have to really. Plus I think it got to the point that learning new maps all the time was just tedious and was taking away from the gameplay rather than adding to it, for me anyway.

Doesn't bother me. I take it or leave it.

Same.

If its a game I'll be waiting for and buying upon release, and playing all the time, ill likely buy the DLC providing its got actual game content in it.

If its a game I won't play much, like Forza 5, then I simply won't buy it.

Likewise if the DLC is crap, and not worth it because it only offers cosmetic changes or other stuff im not interested in. I won't buy it.

Just vote with your feet as to what you feel is good and what isn't

rockstar have already released loads of DLC for free. There was:

The Beach Bum Pack
The Stimulus Package
Content Creator Update
Business Update
The Valentine Massacre Special
The High Life Update
I'm Not a Hipster Update
Independance Day Special
Flight School Update

all for free. Rockstar have said that the reason these are free is because of the income they receive from selling GTA dollars. There will no doubt be a story expansion like the ballard of Gay Tony, but these are usually good value for money and effectively add a whole new game for half the price.

I'm fine with DLC that extends or enhances the original game. When it's obviously part of the main game cut out and sold later to make more £££, then that's just a lazy rip-off.

One advantage of not getting much gaming time each week is that there will be plenty of trusted reviews available when I'm ready to pick up game X.

I am well aware of all the DLC they have given for free, I was merely saying to Raymond that he may be in for a shock when Rockstar release the story/whatever DLC they have planned that isn't free. I'm assuming he will be thinking that to free with what I said.

Not to mention day one patches...

What's the problem with Day One patches?

@OP yes I'm getting fed up with DLC and micro-transactions. What particularly annoys me is the concept of "Season Passes". WTH is a season supposed to mean?

I don't mind DLC if it's not incorporated into the main game. It should be separate and optional. I despise games that push the DLC into your face constantly.

Depends on the game and DLC tbh, if it's good value, I'll buy it. I think the Destiny DLC is good value given the gaming time I get out of it.

I'll take DLC over early access/kickstarter crud...at least you know what you're paying for.

thing is the stuff they will release for a charge will be more expansion than DLC.

Most peoples hates come from small amounts of content you are forced into buying.

I don't think anybody thought the episodes of liberty city game that included lost and the damned and the ballard of gay tony was the sort of poor DLC most in here are complaining about.

Expansions and such after a certain time is great.

Map pack type stuff I hate - especially when the game removes you from lobbies if you don't own the DLC.

Day 1 DLC is just wrong.

Yea as an old school gamer this season pass crap does not impress me, i bought the Destiny dlc due to playing with my mates which was fun, except i got so bored of it ive now sold the game so wont be using the second part.

Its just the way gaming is now, but i wont be buying anymore.

I don't get season passes either , nowadays there's 3 different versions to every game when it comes out ....

Battlefield 4 is the worst for map packs , they bring out a few extra maps about 10 times over 2 years it's ridiculous ... titan fall did the same although they announced there'd be 2 additional dlc before the game was even released

thats EA (battlefield and titanfall) and activision (call of duty) for you.

COD is the second highest grossing game for digital money, second only to GTA V and the amount of money they make from the GTA:O dollars

EA and everybody else is looking at the $23 million Activision have made from COD Advanced Warfare and wanting a slice of the pie

For the record, I disagree Battlefield is the worst, titanfall, COD and BF all employ the season pass model with sequential DLC packs consisting of a bunch of maps and other bits and pieces. Least its not like evolve that had 60 $ worth of day one DLC that the season pass didn't even cover. At least the COD / Battlefield season pass gets you everything.

I don't buy DLC as a rule. I have only ever bought one season pass too (Titanfall) and what a mistake that turned out to be.

The games industry is a den of money grabbing, cynical business models. But we all have a choice to support DLC and season passes or not. But unfortunately almost the entire industry is now geared towards a 12 month shelf life. Look at Titanfall, for example. I tried it on PC for the first time since may last year and globally there were only 1200 players. Most of the game types and expansion map packs were empty. It is less than a year since it was released and the game is dead in the water.

The season pass was a waste of money because it gave me new shiny maps, but divided the community and essentially it boiled down to paying to have maps that I couldn't play because not many people had them.

These days I am far more cautious about what I buy and when. I no longer pre-order, and I almost never buy DLC unless it is part of an offer in a sale or something. I also mainly never buy titles on release.

Unfortunately, the only way to change things is if the gaming community collectively shuns DLC, shuns certain cynical developers/publishers and votes with their wallet.

If you want to effect change, it is the only way. But unfortunately for every gamer that wakes up and smells the coffee there are ten others who are happy to throw good money after bad.

I really can't see that changing anytime soon, so for me I buy what I like and ignore the rest. I try not to get too annoyed at the business models of the devs/pubs as they are, after all, businesses who exist to make money. Its sad the gaming industry has gone that way, but it is what it is.
