Anyone else getting subscription burnout?

But man, having things increase left, right and centre is frustrating as a consumer

I knew this would come eventually, there will be many, many people in the same position.

It's one of the many reasons I still buy physical music, direct from the artist or label when I can. I boycotted buying into Spotify after finding out how they were screwing smaller artists years ago and still enjoy having a media collection.

Yet, I've been berated by many for continuing to buy physical media for the last 5+ years, it's starting to come full circle, in the last 12 months I've been asked to loan things to someone as it was removed from their streaming platform... cheap digital I can tolerate (thinking bandcamp) but subscriptions, I always try to avoid them where I can.

Amazon - My partner orders many items for the horses, so she has Prime for deliveries, and we use that account.
Netflix—We get this through our Sky TV subscription. However, I feel that the quality of the programmes has dropped as other streaming services have emerged. However, we do use this daily.
Sky TV - This is expensive, but I'm an F1 fan.
Grammarly - My spelling and grammar are awful, and having recently purchased it for a year, I've found a marked improvement in the work emails I send.
Leisure Centre membership - Again, my partner and I have a family monthly subscription, which we usually try to use a few times a week.

Those are all the subscriptions I have. My partner likely has many more for her horses and other activities. However, I agree with the original poster that much of what we use now is intangible and subscription-based, which is disappointing.

Current:
SkyTV - got to ring them soon as they have price rises I don't agree with so it'll be haggle time. Sadly in my building Sky is all I can get.
Google One Storage - £1.79 a month. Used for G.Photos.
iCloud 200GB - £2.99 a month. Used for Photos/Video backups.

Cancelled:
AppleTV+ after being with it for years. Absolutely superb service but for now I can't justify it as I've got other priorities. Saved £8.99 a month.
AppleCare+ - Had it for a year on my iPhone14 Pro and never used it as I tend to look after my devices well. Saved £8.99 a month.
MS Office 365 expires on Feb 3rd. Been using it for years mainly due to the 1TB OneDrive clown storage that my NAS backs upto. Forcing AI bloat into this service has made me want out. As of today I'm 100% MS free.

I’ve reduced mine a little lately;

Spotify
Prime yearly
Apple iCloud 200gb
YT Premium

I dislike the subscription model for things like software that used to be buy once but anything I need like this I tend to be able to access through work

The one that really got me was motorcycle airbags for jackets and bags.

The main system is subscription based.

Imagine if somone said your car airbag was subscription based?

all hardware works on its own its not using some off site AI detection algorithm or something just is disabled if you haven't paid.

Bloody hell, that's ridiculous! That reminds me of the time BMW tried to make their heated seats subscription-based:

I think that was what gave the idea but alpinestars etc all use this system but don't worry you get 1 month grace after the last failed payment.

That's the in & motion system. It's subscription based or pay in full, gives the customer the option if they don't want to pay it all upfront. Each year you subscribe the cost to pay in full reduces too. Lifetime warranty on the electronics whilst using the subscription model too.

Comparing it to a car airbag isn't really like for like, it's switchable between road, race/track, adventure and enduro modes, with user replaceable canisters. All crash data is uploaded to in & motion afterwards for analysis and there are regular updates to the detection software from the data they collect worldwide. A very good setup that's saved me a few broken bones over the years.

My only sub is to Uber One for grocery delivery fee discounts @ 9$ month.
The groceries are more expensive in the first place though?

Also I think there is a "scam" with UberOne at the moment where if you pay for the year you get Disney+ included for a year.

I hadn't noticed the groceries being more expensive. And yeah, they keep offering discounted extras like 3mo of Disney iirc and a month free of Ancestry.com etc but I'm not interested.

I'll have to take a look again - I could swear the stuff was significantly more.

I'll happily take your Disney+ code if you don't want them :D lol

I have sky stream as I wanted the sports channels for Prem and F1, that includes Netflix. I then have Disney through a family login, 50GB on icloud for 99p, I get Prime occasionally when I get offered a cheap month, I did have paramount+ for £35 for the year, but that expired and I realised i used it about 4 times so didn't renew, Apple+ I have had a few free periods from different places but never actually subscribed oh and YT premium through a family share on here.

I just have a handful, so no I don't get subscription burnout, I control what I sub to.

I currently have

Disney + (cancelled already, next up Netflix)
Apple TV + (free for 6 months)
Apple Music (ongoing)
iCloud storage (ongoing)

I've reduced mine right down.

Just:
Channels DVR - £5 a month which replaced sky. (I use a SAT-IP box which effectively allows Freesat in all rooms in the house with recording etc and can even be used remotely).
Newsgroup access - £2 a month (Err.. for downloading stuff)
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (Cheap xbox live cards converted over)
Amazon Prime - The Mrs needs the free delivery ;) I rarely watch prime TV.

I ditched
- Sky
- Netflix
- Apple TV
- Disney+

I am running a small server which pretty much does everything for me..

  • Apple One, but that's really for Apple Music which my wife listens to, and a decent sizes iCloud storage. Considering how many iOS apps don't actually back up though, we may change soon
  • Disney+ just 12 months bought before it increased, for a treat.
  • PSN+ Extra & Gamepass Ultimate. Not sure how much longer I'll keep those though.
Prime is awful. If they had a reduced version just for deliveries, and you could constrain the delivery hours (I don't want deliveries at 8am or 10pm) then perhaps, but otherwise it's just not worth it for us.
