Anyone flashed there Vario II to wm 6?

I kind of missed that feature initially because when you tapped X it just minimised the running app rather than closed it, so it was handy having that link so you could go in, stop all the running apps and free a load of memory.

But since you can get apps that actually close running programs when you tap X (the one in this ROM is perfect) I haven't missed it at all.

CID is basically the network operator code for the handset. Everytime you flash the firmware, this code is checked with firware version.

Say your CID code is T-Mobile. If you try and flash it with the HTC firmware, it'll throw up and error and won't let you because they don't match.

What the upgrade ROMS from XDA contain is a small program that puts your handset into temporary Super CID mode before the firmware flash begins. Super CID is basically unlocked.

yeah i'm not sure the running programs one at the bottom is needed now i've spent sometime playing about on it, its in the memory settings anyway if needed. the x button is much better :D

I had that problem with the pervious HTC firmware as well. I thought it was my cheap Bluetooth headset at first but I'm not so sure now. I've heard a lot of reports that the Microsoft Bluetooth stack on Windows Mobile is pretty pants.

I'll phone my girlfriend up later and test it out for you.:)

Indeed it is. No need to go in there and keep freeing up memory as the X Button app does a great job.

I drove down to Brighton yesterday and in that time used TomTom, Text messaging, phone app, camera and a load of other stuff. Got home and went into the running programs section.

Completely blank. Still had 26MB free.
 
As theres so much Vario II/MS Mobile love in here, I'll post a few links to a some decent freeware apps:

Batti: THE best battery indicator program you can get. Absolutely tiny memory foor print as well. Hardly uses any resources.

fit4cat HTweakC 2.1b: A fantastic tweaking app for hermes devices!

Seligmans Launcher: This fantastic app places an icon bar on your Today screen with shortcuts to all your favourites apps. Dead easy to add and remove shortcuts. I was using SPB Pocket Plus for this task but it used up a chunk of memory and made the phone a bit sluggish. This app uses barely an memory and has no impact on OS speed!

Replace the horrible phone dialer skin with one from this site! Some nice themes as well.

MS Live Search: Make use of that 3G/HSDPA connection! More info on what this app can do here.

TCPMP: THE best movie player for PPC!

PHM Registry Editor: A nice free reg editor.

Total Commander: An excellent free file manager. More powerful than File Explorer.

I've got all those installed plus a few other items and the OS still feels fast and responsive.

I used to love SPB Pocket Plus as it contained a battery meter and quick launch app built in. Batti and Launcher basically provide the same functionality but using a fraction of the memory SPB used and still making the phone feel fast.

is it just me or do the other Vario2 owners find the address book is absolutely rubbish at organising your contacts?

does it even support caller groups for example?
 
In the years that I've owned a mobile phone, I've never used caller groups. Mind you, I don't have hundreds of contact details.

I've got absolutely no complaints with the address book.

My only major complaint with Windows Mobile is the ability to send multiple contacts the same text message.

With the Symbian OS, you have a check box next to each contact and you simply run down the list and check every contact you want to send the message to.

With Windows Mobile, the best you can do is start typing the contacts name, auto predict will kick in after 2 letters and then you select the contact. Would be so much easier if you could just go into the contact list and do it the Symbian OS way.
 
i do have a couple of hundred contacts in mine and with the caller group feature i can send messages to everyone in a certain group and/or assign different ringtones for work/family/friends etc.
sadly i can't figure out how to do this on my Vario2.

I've done all the steps but I have one question, after Step 13, I got a new RUU file of size 66xxx but after I copied it over the ROM folder, the size changed to 86xxx :confused: is that normal?

update: hmmm..it seems normal now, I created a new RUU file and this time, it shows 86xxx :confused:

whats the deal with this "bootloader"?
is this a program i need to dload in order to flash my handset or is it included on the rom of the device already?

I'd love to flash my Orbit to WM6 but so scared of ending up with a brick.

But as the OP said, there's a whole library of pages and I'm sure I've read somewhere that some PDA's have a DOMOD chip or something that allows you to flash that, similar to a dual BIOS or something. Or maybe I'm talking poo, dunno.

edit: actually, I have another question :) Should I do the SIM unlock first before flashing?
 
All you had to do was download the .exe firmware version you want, connect Vario II to PC, establish and Active Sync connection, make sure PC is not set to hibernate or similar (not good halfway through a flash!), make sure battery is full and then run the .exe.
