anyone going to next weeks protests?

If the Chinese can't block what they want to, what chance does this country stand. By my understanding, 140k direct hits on child porn sites were blocked within the first week.

The list should be open to public scrutiny I think though.

That would be an obvious improvement, but it's not going to happen, the government doesn't believe in openess where extension of state control is concerned.

I'm pretty sure it's not mandatory, not least because I was able to access the offending image from several isps during the time when it was supposed to be blocked.

In a Parliamentary written answer the new Home Office Minister Vernon Croaker set a deadline of the end of 2007 for all ISPs to implement a “Cleanfeed”-style network level content blocking platform. New ISPs will be required to implement such a blocking platform within nine months of starting operations.

all ISPs offering broadband internet connectivity to the UK general public put in place technical measures that prevent their customers accessing websites containing illegal images of child abuse identified by the IWF.

I imagine that you could see it because the isp hadn't got around to it yet.

My only concern is that, does protests really change things? Obviously I did not do much research, so should there be case(s) with protesting successfully changed the world, then please provide information.

That article was written in 2006. Can you show me anything which states that the isps were in fact forced to implement it when the end of 2007 came?

A couple of months back it was reported that 5% of internet users are using ISP that don't block so I don't think it will happen.

That would be an obvious improvement, but it's not going to happen, the government doesn't believe in openess where extension of state control is concerned.

Would be interesting if someone requested it under FIA

Protests do change things. Just because they may initially be ignored doesn't mean that a point hasn't been made or that politicians won't have to double-think.

If people didn't protest I'd hate to imagine what the world would be like. For you to even assume that they don't change anything shows extreme naivity.

Read up on the recent history in Latin America (1950s-90s) for a rough example.

If people don't have an outlet for their frustrations, soon those tensions become riots and riots can soon become revolutions.

The Virgin Killers album cover did.

Not on my ISP it wasn't. But then I am with one of the 5% that do not use the IWF cleanlist.

I hope so, it was only in Nov 2006 that Nick Griffin was brought to trial.

And was found not guilty if I recall?

What terrorist stuff is blocked? Also, please show me evidence that any otherwise legal site has been removed just because the government didn't like it. For the record, the fact that we don't know about any such activities is not evidence that those activities are happening but being covered up.

Internet Watch Foundation, it has a blacklist that it supplies to many ISPs who then block anything on it. Mostly child porn but I believe some terrorist stuff is on it too. Some ISPs refuse to use it (and are currently being put under pressure by the Government to do so). While it's aims are without doubt noble the problem comes if the government becomes somewhat less beniegn and uses it as a tool for censorship. However it is pretty much useless as all you need to do is use an anonymous proxy site to get past it.

The governments of this world dont give a stuff about climate change, the technology exists to run a petrol engine on hydrogen with the only emissions being water vapour, but the worlds leaders carry on supporting an industry lead by the oil companies of the world, untill petrol and diesel are made illegal, climate change is a inevitable

Water vapour is the biggest global warming gas!

how do you plan on making all this hydrogen?

Right, so scientists possibly finding a way to store hydrogen safely is somehow proof of a government conspiracy to force us to keep using fossil fuels?

Right...

Politically it is much easier to not use fossil-fuels. However, the costs incurred to ween the modern economy off of them is another matter. If there is any 'control' regarding the issue it is with the large financial houses which have some political leeway. Incidently, More4 are showing a documentary soon titled 'Who Killed the Electric Car?' or something similar. Might be worth a watch.
