Hi all,

Is it just me who is not running the latest and greatest? Everyone on here seems to be running 8800 systems with Core Duo.

Im happily running a DFI EXPERT with 3000+ Winnie cpu 1800xt. It runs really fast, I do all my work on it and all games run without problems.

Could you lot (not running super PC's)ever justify the cost of some of the recent components?

To me it seems madness.

I feel weird when it comes to upgrading. Sometimes I'm really up for it, on the verge of going out and getting the kit - but then I think for a few minutes and wonder why I need it...

My current system (you'l laugh when you see the spec) is capable of doing everything I need it to. I PS, play CSS, have 20 IE pages open at a time, with loads of apps running at a respectable speed (mIRC, MSN, VLC, WMP...) I never really get knaffed off with it - only, I guess when I want to play the latest games, but then again - that's what my 360's for

My spec at the moment is a 2200+ Athlon, 2gb p3200 geil, 9600pro ocd, 350gb hdds! I can never justify the upgrade when the current kit does what i want. Doesn't stop me wanting a shiny new conroe tho :D

I have a dual CPU AMD 2400+ PC with 2.5GB ram and 15K SCSI drives which is about 6 years old. It works well for most of the things I want to do.

I would like to play the latest games but am getting limited on what the PC spec can handle. I would love a new PC but can't afford it at the moment.

I'm on a P4 2.6-or-something and I don't really care, it works fine.

My laptop is a CoreDuoSomething and I also don't really care, it seems quick enough I guess.

My servers, however, are , because they need to be. I don't do much at my PCs - got consoles for gaming - Gamecube & Wii (soon - possibly a 360 too, dunno.)

I don't do much :D

it's all about how big you can get your e-penis to be! i'd go as far as saying that 90% of people on this forum have pc's that are way overkill for their needs and uses! (myself included, i admit to it!) i mainly play cs1.6 and my system crushes it but it didn't stop me upgrading from a opty 170 @ 2.8ghz! it's also the overclocking challenge for me that draws me to new hardware ;)

AMD 64 3000 and a 7800gt here 1.5Gibs of RAM (in dual channel). If money allowed I would upgrade but I am not stupid enough (read rich enough) to upgrade my CPU.

I play simulators so I should be able to justify the upgrade but it is too much money when push comes to shove.

Running a 6300 @ 2.87ghz with a 7800GT and 2gb OCZ DDR2 667 @ 820mhz...

I wouldn't have gone conroe but someone bought me the 6300 for helping them out with their computer, the new motherboard will be covered by my old CPU and mobo and the good quality RAM only cost me about £20-£25 to swap over from my generic ddr667 :)

Th eprices for the 8800GTX etc. are getting beyond a joke, I paid £200 for my 7800GT pretty much when it came out and it showed a similar boost over the 6 series as the £350 GTS does over current 7 series and x1900s. Regardless of DX10 they shouldn't cost that much :p

Everyone loves a big E-penis. I'm running an Opty 146 and X850XT which was good stuff once upon a time but it's no longer the best. I won't be upgrading for a long time though - I've pretty much stopped gaming.

Can't say I went all out when I upgraded recently. €600 in total, about £400.

New mobo for £50, decent enough gfx for £130, E6300 for £120 and a shiny new case and PSU for £80.

That plays any new games perfectly fine and looks great. I don't see the need for a X6800 and a 8800 for over £1000 alone.

I'm playing Medieval 2: TW (haha.. got it a week before it was released because Game in limerick screwed up :D ), Civ4 (still), X3 Reunion (wow...) and hopefully COH for christmas and Crysis when it comes out. I don't have any delusions of play Crysis on max settings but it'll still be damn pretty :)

i got the spec in my sig, and that runs all games 100% cooshdy... pretty near maxed out on all games, running at res 1024 x 768... thats fine for me at the mo...

i keep looking at the newer graphics cards and thinking "i want one :D " then i get as far as putting in my card details and i think, "this is daft, whats the point it all runs fine as it is"... and cancel it lol.

im happy with my comp as it is now, runs awesomely! perfect for my needs.

i remember about 1 year ago, i bought an HIS ATI Radeon X850XT PE on AGP for £330! and insane price looking back at it now, got a better card than that now for £140 lol!... if i didnt buy the X1800XT a few months back i would have got one of the 8800GTS'... but I ALWAYS keep thinking to myself "MUST... UPGRADE... COMPUTER..." everytime something new comes out lol...

why is upgrading addictive lol!

My PC has remained the same for the past two and a bit years now and I can't see it changing in the next year or so unless it dies which is a possibility. It is a socket 754 A64 3400, 1gb Ram(single stick) and a 6800gt which is still passable for most games so I'm happy enough considering the value I've got out of it.

Athlon XP 3000+ with 6800GT, 2GB RAM and ~1TB storage. Does everything I need it to do but getting a bit sluggish in some of the more recent games. No way can I justify the cost of upgrading from AGP -> PCI-E & DDR -> DDR2 etc though.

Running an Athlon XP 2500+, 512MB RAM, 6800GT. When I have the time and energy I'll upgrade, but as it's now been over 3 years since I reinstalled Windows that may be a while off. On the plus side the computer still works, does most of what I want and hasn't cost much. On the down side it's quite slow and sounds like a tornado.

I've been running more or less the same system for a couple of years now - P4 2.8 Ghz, Radeon 9800 Pro, 2 x 80GB HDD and 1 GB RAM. The PC is fine at doing everyday tasks and multitasking but it doesn't like running shader-heavy games at high quality [surprisingly ebough].

However, I get the feeling that my main hard drive's life is not all it once was, and with the advent of Vista I'll be upgrading to a Core Duo system next month. For a lot of people here, it's not only about big e-penises but the fun of adding and testing new bits of hardware. I just wish it wasn't so bloody expensive or I'd be doing it more often too.

Running p4 630 (3ghz) (overclocked tho)
1 gig ddr pc2 4300
6800gs
hdds: (with some of them old, the 160 gig is a 2mb cache hdd...)
1.26Tb total

Runs everything fine..., only oblivion cant be maxed out and medival 2 demo, but rest is smooth maxed out...

from this thread i think i'm on 2nd "worst"

Athlon-m 2400
1GB HyperX
6800GT
120GB

still runs everything i throw at it fine, but then again i havent played a new game on it since Quake4

not sure how it'd handle BF2142, but i'd love to be able to play it.

I had a dual amd 1900+ on a agp 4x board which was fine for my needs until it gave me trouble nearly 2 years ago and died a few months back. So I upgraded 2 years ago to the best I could get at the time a A64 4000+ Clawhammer, finally on a agp 8x board so I could use my Quadro 980XGL to its full but disapointingly potential, I do a lot of 3D work.

Since then I bought another A64 4000+ sandiego system for my htpc/render node for a quarter of the price of my previous system... and sure I could get rid of all my machines (I have two dual xeon 2Ghz machines as render nodes) and switch to 4 machines with quadcore cpus, etc and render soooo much faster but the work I do doesn`t really demand quick out put as I might spend all day working on a scene go to bed with it rendering and wake up with it done so it wouldn`t help me work any faster at the moment.

I`d love to spend the cash to full fill a dream of a nice render farm of about 20 machines, but do I need it? The WIFE says NO!...

I dont game much, only sof2 mainly and live for speed.

X2 3800+ / 1024MB Geil Value PC3200 / GeForce 6600GT / 250GB + 120GB HDD

Only just upgraded the CPU from a 3500+ and the graphics card was a Ti4200 a year ago which still did what I wanted.

Got the one in my sig.

VERY tempted to boost the CPU up and go for a Conroe or E630 and get a cheaper mobo to run it on. Stab a new stick of Ram in and be done for a fairly cheap price.

Wreckon buying a cheapo 7800GT and shoving it on SLI would be worth it? , i personally cant decide or save for a better card.
