Anyone with Gigaclear?

How are they for getting a better deal at the end of your contract?

I've heard mixed stories (about half the people around here have managed to talk it down to only a 20% hike while the other half have had no luck), there is also potentially Squirrel who are on the GC network - I'm not really sure the setup but can be an option for lower prices.

Engineer came out and now have a stable connection.

Issue?

I shall quote the engineer "Somebody did a bit of a bodged job in the cabinet"

He assured me that the entire fibre run up to my house has been checked and resolved. Signal quality readings are now excellent (I'm pulling 510Mbps from the speedtest within the router, never been that high before).

We shall see if it falls over again.

Spoke to soon. Went down again late yesterday and still down this morning.

What an utter shambles.

Back on the phone to Gigaclear when their support lines open to get yet another engineer out.

Did you get it resolved? We had someone from Gigaclear at the door last night. Missed them though. It is tempting but I’m really put off by the whole 100%+ price increase after 18 months

If you’re prepared to sign up to another 18 month contract then I think it’s unlikely that you’ll see that increase

I did yes.

An excellent engineer came out and diagnosed the issue due to a bad splice at the cabinet.

Spent a while sorting it out, left me with a newer/better router and his personal number to call him back if I get any further problems.

I was going to switch to Squirrel. They use the Gigaclear infrastructure and were far cheaper than the post 18 month contract price with Gigaclear.

I just phoned Gigaclear up, told them about the Squirrel prices and they bettered it, so just renewed.

In 18 months time, I’ll just repeat the exercise again.

Renewal deal offered to someone in my family by Gigaclear was pretty much double the new customer pricing. They were not willing to negotiate beyond a token amount, and unfortunately are the only FTTP network in the area. Worth checking their partner ISP's - https://gigaclear.com/our-partners - some of these offer better prices than Gigaclear's existing customer renewal deals.

Sounds like they’re taking advantage of being the only fibre provider in the area. We also have Lightspeed available and Openreach have starting their installation work in town over the past few weeks

More messing about with Gigaclear - status changed to live and available to order - but after a lot of beating about the bushes still no progress and seems to be the same issue of no interest in actually solving running the line the last few metres just lots of talk. Wessex out of the blue said they can enable us the end of the week so looks like we are going with that assuming it works out. BT FTTP looking like it is still 2 years away optimistically :( though no doubt the moment someone, in this case by the looks of it Wessex, actually pushes through to the area they will all probably suddenly show some interest :s

So eventually it was Wessex who won though it was a long problematic process, finally caught up with the rest of the world with Wessex FTTP enabled this morning.

Gigaclear, the community rep who we dealt with initially when they first showed an interest in the area aside, was a total shambles, same for 1-2 other alt nets who were making noise about enabling the area but never actually did anything other than make empty claims and promises they obviously had no intention of making good on and nothing but vagueness from BT as well.
