Anything wrong with this job application?

Im afraid i got to be honest here, i fail to see where Spie has made fun of anyone? Members have, and sure this thread was open for that, but im sure eveyones aware that they dont represent OCUKs views?

I personally did laugh at the quality of some of these, but i dont consider it a personal attack, I consider it amusement at some peoples ineptitude. If they are seriously applying for a job they should ACT serious about it, if they cant then why should anyone else take their application seriously?

Oh nuts, I was thinking in German again. My mistake :P

Hehe. I always got the German wrong. Pronounce the second one when it's ie or ei. Took me ages to learn that.

Here's a few more received in the last few months, quoted exactly except for removal of personal information.

Clearly some of these people are keen to work, but without basic skills they are going to find it tough.

Clearly, my application to OcUK years ago was superior to those you have quoted and I still didn't get the job :p (probably because I had to offer to relocate to Stoke-on-Trent for a job, which seems insane :D)

As someone who has gone through many job applications and interviews in the past, IMO, most of the applicants you have quoted gives the initial impression of "throw in the CV with a quick cover letter and pray I'll get the job". The number of applications where I've simply come across "interested in job, cv attached, please look" simply shows that the applicant isn't bothered or won't even put the slightest of effort to show interest in the job. Any employer can't justify employing people like these.

Ignoring the informal approach from the original letter you posted (I suppose formal/informal approach varies with employers but formal approaches are the preferable route), any employer looking at an application full of "I am this" and "I can do that" without any solid evidence or an application full of self-description gets thrown away simply as it bears little to no relevance to what the employer is looking for.

Taking a random guess at Spie's idea of employing someone... e.g. for the TEC001 job, it requires:
Some previous experience. Excellent technical knowledge of current hardware and Windows operating systems. Excellent fault-finding ability. You must have at least 5 GCSE passes at grade C or above with your own transport and live within daily commuting distance of Stoke-on-Trent..
Saying that you have used Windows since you was born, have fixed every PC in India and live at Land's End but have no problems taking the train to OcUK on a daily basis has no relevance to the application.

Describing how you have worked at <company name> as a technician such as maintaining a network running Windows 2000, building new machines to add to the network, have a proven record of fault-finding (such as helpdesk), have a degree in Criminology and live 2 miles from Stoke-on-Trent owning a Vauxhall Corsa will most likely land you the job.

All those that are moaning and complaining about suspensions and free speech and "did he have to" etc, need to remind themselves of the forum rules. They are available free of charge here.

Have a nice day

I dont think anyone actually broke the forum rules.

Was just wondering, when you write a formal email to someone, would you finish it with "yours faithfully/yours sincerely"?

I just wondered whether the rules of letter writing applied to emails as well.

I posted this earlier! :p

If you know the name of the person you're writing to, use "Yours Sincerely," if you don't know the name of the person you're writing to, use "Yours Faithfully,". :)

Does anyone else find it ironic that many of the posts criticising the poor English skills of job applicants, have poor English skills themselves? :)

Not really, I'll be the first admit I'm not good at spelling or punctuation. However I will always doble check, then get someone else who is good at grammer to have a read though and check it for me. When you'r applying for a job and you have time is it really that hard to get someone else to check it for you?

We get some incredible ones when we are advertising for a position, some people can barely spell there own names

Semantic errors like those won't be picked up by a spell checker. I just think that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones :)

Oh and I don't know many females called Mark either. :D
