I think regardless of preparation and stuff it's pretty much pot luck in a situation like that.
All you guys saying 'well I'd get a weapon and TAKE WHAT I WANTED'
Think you'll be the only one doing that? Think you're the most ruthless of the people doing it in your vicinity? Can you even shoot straight? Could you put an axe in someone's brain pan?
It's all well and good saying this stuff but be realistic, the first few weeks or probably months after it went to pot would be filled with panic and murder and chaos. Who actually got out of that would be largely down to luck.
Anyone heading towards the obvious food/weapons store locations will be in for a bit of a shock seeing as everyone else will be going there too. Personally I would try my best to stay away from the most obvious places, unless I'd had some sort of advance warning and could be confident I'd be there first.
Apart from that I have a reliable, economical, off-road ready motorbike that can carry luggage and quite a lot of sturdy and comfortable protective gear, so I suppose that'd be an advantage. Would only take one person to knock me off my bike and take it though. It also wouldn't take long for petrol to become very scarce indeed, or at least all in the hands of people that will want something in return for it, or simply be hoarding it. Every petrol station would become a miniature fortress run by scumbags. So would every supermarket.
I'd try and keep a low profile as much as possible, get to somewhere where you're reasonably confident everyone else won't be, or if other people are there, you can spread out enough to stay mostly out of harm's way.
I've got an air pistol that looks legit from a distance, **** knows how much that would be though, outside of intimidation, but that could spectacularly backfire as well.
I don't think it'd take long for mob rule to come into place, and after a long period of complete mayhem, the numbers would be slimmed down considerably, then the real 'survival' bit would start.
