I am getting refunded for my Dell U2711 because there was a problem with the panel.

The antiglare coating looked a bit sparkly on white pages, so am after an non antiglare screen

I went and viewed the Apple cinema display and it looks really nice. I forgot to check the connections, what does it have on the back - Guessing HDMIs, Dual DVI, displayport, audio and a few others.

My other options are to get another U2711 or a Hazro. I have heard issues of bad panels and buzzing on the Hazros.

Does the Apple have any issues with buzzing, panel issues (what panel does it use?)

Thanks

Umm :D not to burst your bubble, but the old 27" ACD I think only has 1 built in mini display port cable, a USB 2.0 cable and a magsafe cable?

The new thunderbolt 27" ACD has 1 thunderbolt cable and 1 magsafe cable.

The only ports on the back are USB on the old ACD and Firewire/Ethernet/USB/Thunderbolt on the newer display.

It's not a display built for pc's. It can be used on a pc, but you cannot alter things like the brightness etc. I would think the speakers/webcam will work fine on a pc. Just you will need to setup the brightness on a mac then hook it up to your pc.

The new one will require a thunderbolt port so will not work at all yet. As I believe there are no pcs with compatable thunderbolt yet?

What was the problem with the U2711 panel? The 'sparkling'? Pretty sure all non gloss monitors have it to some extent. I'm pretty close to buying one myself.

As for adapters just buy a mini display port to whatever connection you have on the back of your computer. ie mdp - dvi, hdmi, vga, dp etc

note: I read they were making the mdp to hdmi ones illegal something to do with licensing so may want to grab one before they're unavailable if they're not already.

Works great on my pc, probably the best thing I've bought for it! iSight worked straight away as did the speakers. For brightness just install bootcamp and the drivers, then update them and you should be able to control it, alternatively if you have anything apple you can change it with that and it will stick.

The speakers are very good too, I use them to listen to the radio etc when my speakers or headphones would be overkill.

The amount of anti-glare is stupid. I always turn my brightness down on monitors anyway. If I spend £650 on a monitor, I dont want a piece of tracing paper glued to the screen.

There's loads of reports of this and quite a few reviews / guides on how to remove it.

Apart from this, it is a fantastic monitor. Maybe Dell should listen and make some without the anti glare.

The Apple I viewed today (it was the new thunderbolt one) Didnt have heavy antiglare. I looked at the white background and it didnt sparkle

...Conclusion

To sum up: I love the Dell U2711 Monitor, but I hate the image it displays. I won’t be buying it again unless Dell drastically reduce the aggressiveness of the Anti Glare coating and minimise the resultant image speckle.

Connections on the Apple screen are turning me off and build quality and a few known issues with Hazro are turning me off them. I am tempted by the Hazro HZ27WA though

I would be very very surprised if the one you saw was the new thunderbolt one. They don't have them shipping yet. The old ones look identical it's only the ports at the back that are different. The two apple stores near me certainly haven't got them in yet.

Do the mdp to hdmi converters support resolutions as high as 2560x1440? When I tried my Dell Laptop on a Hazro panel it all went horribly wrong. I think you'd need a dual-link dvi cable for this res and I'm guess the adapter I tried was limited to a single channel and probably 1920x1080 :(

Yes, only display port and dual-dvi support higher res than 1080p

Is mini display port what only what Apple use? Why dont they just use display port, dvi and hdmi like everyone else?

I use a mini display port to display port (single cable) form my mac mini to my Dell 27" and it works fine at 1920X1200.

I think the reason they use mini display port is for size constraints on the portable machines mainly.

Is mini display port be capable of 2560x1440?

Why do you only use 1920x1200 on the Dell 27" and not 2560x1440 (I'm presuming its a U2711)

Sadly it's nothing as fancy as that :( It's a 2709W. I'm pretty sure mini display port can support up to 2560X1600 so no trouble on that front and it can carry audio as well iirc.

I agree, my local Apple Store doesn't have them either.

I'm using mdp to dvi on my Dell laptop to a screen 1920x1200 but when I tried with the Hazro that all went very wrong. I've assumed because the DVI part is not dual link so the higher resolution is not supported.
