Apple cinema display 27"

I would be very very surprised if the one you saw was the new thunderbolt one. They don't have them shipping yet. The old ones look identical it's only the ports at the back that are different. The two apple stores near me certainly haven't got them in yet.

They're actually shipping within 24hrs online now.

I went into the purple shirt shop in town today and asked how the Apple Cinema display connected to PC, at first she told me it was via USB. I then said, no it isnt and she figured out by tracing the lead that it was by a 'smaller connection' I presume she meant mini display port.

She said a converter for mini display port to dvi could be used. I asked how to change the brightness on a pc and got the reply "buy a mac"

Fantastic!

From what she told me thunderbolt is just for data transfer like usb3, and the new cinema displays are exactly the same and use mini displayport

So can you get mdp > dual DVI?
Yes. You need Apple part number: MB571Z/A (or third-party equivalent). As you probably know, a mDP to single-link DVI adapter won't support 2560x1440.

I use the Apple adapter mentioned above with my Mac mini and U2711. However, I wouldn't recommend it if you are going to use it in conjunction with a non-Apple display due to the interference issues you get (see the reviews on the Apple website). I have this occasionally and it's really annoying.

A better alternative would be the Kanex MDPC30...

Jesus, £70. Woudnt it need to be calibrated (brightness etc) with a Mac still? Or can you get some random 3rd party program for PC to edit apple cinema settings?

The Thunderbolt Apple Cinema Display is for Thunderbolt equipped Macs only.

If you look at the specs, it has a Magsafe Power Cable and a Thunderbolt connection, which is used for the display. It also shows that the display is only compatible with the latest Macs which are Thunderbolt equipped.

So unless there is a Thunderbolt to DVI or similar... there isn't anyway it can be used on a PC or even an older Mac right now.

The previous Apple Cinema Display, which you can still get hold off at the moment is fine though.

Wouldn't it need to be calibrated (brightness etc) with a Mac still?
From what I can tell, yes. :(

There used to be a program called WinACD which let you adjust the brightness of Cinema Displays but it hasn't been updated for years so won't work with the latest Apple displays or Vista/7.

I seem to remember reading that the only way to change the brightness is to connect it to a mac so she was right :)

you install bootcamp drivers from the disk they allow brightness up/down

and also i have tried to of the supposed adapters that are meant to work they didnt

the only was i got mine working was orignally i had mac graphics card in a pc.. (occasional reboot and lock up on boot ups) but now i use a pcie wit hmini display port works perfectly

Hi Guys

Looking to get a cinema display to go with my PC, very impressed when I saw it in person!!

Currently I only have 2 x DVI connectors on my graphics card (no display port) so I would either need to buy an adaptor or upgrade my card.

The DVI to DP adaptor is expensive & I guess it would not allow me to use the speakers/webcam built into the monitor????

If I upgraded my card to one with displayport then I would only need to buy a cheap DP to MDP adaptor.

Can someone please confirm that by using a graphics card with display port built in, the speakers & webcam will work on a PC?

Also any recommendations on an nvidia GTX 570 (+) card with display port built in?

Appreciate your assistance!!

Any reason why you've overlooked the Dell 27inch screen? Being a PC user I would go with that personally.

I don't like the coating on the dell screen, I prefer the high gloss finish that comes with the apple cinema display (others will disagree with me i know!)

Also the dell does not have built in speakers & webcam, so more clutter!!

If my card has a display port, I can get an adaptor right and it will still work?
