I phoned the main centre, not my store.

OK, here's another how long is a bit of a string question, but if I had a look round on Friday to see if I could pick one up and failed, I wonder how long they will have them to dispatch immediately online?

Would I have to order around midnight to have half a chance?

To be honest, all this rising at dawn and queuing, only to be disappointed at the end is not really for me. I can't see me having any luck unless I start queuing at 5 in the morning, which I'm not prepared to do.

For the sake of a day or two, I might just order it at midnight on the 1st.

First ipad I bought was the 1, and it was preordered. Walked in with my confirmation and picked it up no problems.

It was for the iPhone 5S/5C. At the end of the day, its not too much of a stretch past bedtime, so worth staying up for to see. Otherwise it will be the morning if its not up.

I'd actually rather online orders opened at 8am along with the stores tbh, as I'm planning to try my luck at the store and, should I miss out due to stock, then potentially order online. If online orders start at midnight then by the time I've done the store there's a risk the initial batch of online orders will have sold out.

Paranoid maybe but that's the way my luck works

As Chris says though, you can just order one and cancel it. Its likely to be processing for a longtime and within the cancellation window while you actually go to a store.

The other factor is that there are less options, where as with the iPhone, the now numerous colour choices, in particular the demand for gold led to lower stock.

Yeah I think I'll do the order then cancel thing if I can't get one at the store.

Not going to turn up stupidly early nor will I queue for hours just to get one on launch day. Will just saunter down around 7am and see what's going on and what the queues are like.

John Lewis showing the iPads on their website as well, saying ordering goes live 8am on Friday. Will probably order off them, get a 2 year warranty and have them deliver to local Waitrose for Saturday pickup!

Just one thing I wanted to confirm, are the John Lewis iPads unlocked or are they like carphone warehouse where they lock to whatever sim you put in first?

They haven't done pre-ordering now with the recent iOS device launches. Instead it just goes on sale on the website on the same day its launched in shops. You then have to wait until it arrives, which could even be a two+ week wait if its like the iPhone 5S stocks.

Was the 5S/5C midnight? (I didn't order one so I don't know)

So the current guesses seem to be midnight, 8am and 9am.

I hope it's 9 cos then I can do it when I get to work
