No. Sky are utter bellends and make it almost impossible to do any of the normal things you might want to do to be able to use your insanely expensive sky sports subscription.

I have access to my partners parents Sky account and have just stopped using it to watch any sport because the app on my mac is beyond awful, gives a poor picture quality and breaks regularly. I get a far far better experience from using dodgy streams that I do from their official app. Who are those dodgy streams using? Sky of course. Utter joke.

That is insane.

I'm not really sure why they don't allow you to cast it to the TV, is there a down side? Do they think people will use their sub to do it in a say a pub?

Basically yes or give their account to people who don’t subscribe so they can watch it on their TV like the person quoted above.

Not a subscriber but wants to watch sky sports and complains when it doesn’t work. :p

Go with the ipad air 4, definitely worth it seen some great reviews , looking at getting one myself

The Air is objectively the better buy however the pull of that 120hz display is significant. I sold my OnePlus 7T Pro and was considering getting the iPhone 12 but opted for S20 FE as the refresh rate is just too good to ignore. My brother got the 12 and although it is a lovely phone etc I couldn't get over the 60hz.

To me it's seems a bit nuts when you have Amazon, Netflix, Apple, Youtube etc etc all trying to compete and are basically saying, here you can use this on 5 devices at the same time, it doesn't matter if it's TV or a watch. Do what you want.

Seems a step back unless they're thinking their nowtv rubbish is going to take off, which it won't because it's way over priced.

I get that argument but the difference is that those services don't come with a set top box for your TV or a separate multiroom subscription service to protect the revenue from and milk their customers dry. I'm not defending Sky, I don't subscribe and never have. Having to pay for a service and watch 15 mins of adverts every hour while 98% of the content is junk doesn't really tick the box for me. What I am trying to say is that their business model is inherently different to the likes of Netflix and Amazon and they have traditional revenue streams to protect which are very lucrative for not a lot of effort and most of their core customer base will put up with it.

I think the iPad pro is still better at multicore but your right in that for the money the new iPad air is a better buy. That 120hz screen though...:(

Edit: the face ID and speakers are better on the pro but the main pull is the screen. Not sure its worth the extra until they refresh it with an A14X type chip which may be suspiciously like a slightly slower M1 chip.

It’s not worth it for the screen. 120Hz doesn’t affect the experience. It’s nice for the first few minutes and then it’s just meh

I switch between an iPad Pro, 12 Pro Max and MBP 13 all the time and never miss the 120Hz display.

I think that's personal preference more than anything else. My wife is happy with the screen on a 2015 MBA, I can't stand to look at it (low resolution, poor colour etc.).

My PC screen is 144hz and the motion blur on my iPhone is very noticeable when scrolling text for instance and looks pretty gross (especially something like this forum). Where the OLED on the phone obviously makes up for it is black levels and brightness. If your just watching YouTube, sure your not going to notice but once you have spent a lot of time at >60Hz its really quite noticeable. My 2nd screen is 60hz and the mouse movement just looks blurry compared to the main display.

Admittedly I don't really miss the high refresh on my MBP 16 either - despite my main monitor being 120hz.
I popped into Currys yesterday (as Currys stores go it's probably one of the worst, NI only seem to have two megastores with the rest looking like glorified airport stores) and unsurprisingly they didn't have a 2020 Air on display (or in stock for that matter) however they did for some strange reason have a 2018 Pro on display even though they don't sell them any more, go figure :D (must have been clearance stock).
Anyhow as expected the Promotion display was a joy to use but not having the Air side-by-side to directly compare the two was a bit annoying.

Thats quite a bit different to a >90% accurate DCI P3 coverage, IPS, 500 Nit MBP display. I hate looking at a 1600x900 TN panel too :p

My main PC uses a 144 Hz, 1440p display too, but as I say, I wouldn’t spend the extra just to have a high refresh rate display

So I got another go on a Pro model (now that I know how to switch off the 120hz :p) and I have to say it's a joy to use. I can appreciate how in general use some people might not notice or appreciate the difference but when scrolling through websites it's night and day for me. When scrolling in 60hz I can feel my eyes vibrating in their sockets! I can imagine for long term reading or web browsing the 60hz could become very tiresome after a while.

I’ve been using my iPad Pro far more as a laptop replacement recently. I think it has almost completely replaced it aside from gaming and some apps that I can only run on Windows. I can video conference, do word, PowerPoint and even Remote Desktop from it to another machine (which is weird seeing windows running on an iPad). The battery lasts an incredible amount of time and I can easily multi-task with it. Having a couple of documents open and YouTube playing in the corner is nice. Plus it is ultraportable and converts into a media machine when I’m not working.

I will still need my big laptop to run some windows only applications and play some games but my other laptop that I mostly use for work is definitely under pressure now.

The iPad has proven itself to be far more versatile than my other machines. I can use it for work, media and education where it is on a par or exceeds the performance of other machines. I would only say that it is lacking on gaming and it could do with stepping up from the mobile style game platform onto some more grown up. I long to be able to open up steam on iPad and download some games form there. I imagine that is a long way off..

You can use Stadia or Geforce Now and get that experience albeit a streaming one.

Guys, eyeing up an iPad Air 4th Gen however I've seen a used or refurbished 2018 Pro can be picked up for roughly similar money.
If price is the same, in any of your experiences, which one would be the better buy?

I went with the Air, I find it great, very fast and can use the 2nd gen pencil and magic keyboard. I haven’t used a Pro so I haven’t experienced 120Hz. It’s a newer chipset so I think it will be updated for longer. If they are similar cost it makes sense to get as much longevity as possible.

How do you find the fingerprint reader? That's the one thing that puts me off... Seems like it can be quite fussy.

Would you believe I was actually on this page this morning to give an update on my current Pro/Air situation although life got in the way and I only just got round to revisiting!
I said I ordered a 2018 Pro instead of the Air however shortly after I also ordered an Air but the back order was so long it only arrived yesterday.
Having used it for the past 24hrs I have to say I am really enjoying it and I reckon I will keep this and move the Pro on now. I know I raved about the 120hz screen but I also acquired an iPhone 12 in December so from using that I have to say you very quickly get used to the 60hz again, plus iOS is so well optimised it doesn’t feel like 60hz.
Overall I think the Air is the better device over the Pro (again I stress 2018 model) and battery life is noticeably better - I imagine this is down to the A14 chip.
The biggest difference however is the speakers. At full volume the Pro is miles ahead with its quad speaker array vs the two on the Air. That being said it is only at the highest volumes and I think most people would use a dedicated speaker before they would reach those sorts of volume levels anyway.
One final take away (and I’m probably talking nonsense at this point) the Air feels lighter than the Pro. I’d assumed they were the same weight but when I get a chance I will get the scales out and check lol.

Sorry one more thing (I meant to include this is my response above) I actually prefer the fingerprint scanner to FaceID on the iPad - again contrary to my original thoughts.
I will caveat this by saying that as a tool I do prefer FaceID and much prefer it on my iPhone than any fingerprint based Android. However, on the iPad the need to swipe up after your face has been detected is an absolute pain. I know it’s the same on the iPhone but it’s always in my hand. Sometimes my iPad will be at arms length away on my desk or such and when I tap the screen for FaceID to do it’s thing it’s a pain to have to swipe up from the bottom to unlock. Secondly again because the iPad might not always be right in front of me the FaceID only works first time around 50% of the time.
Contrast this with the fingerprint reader where you just hold your finger on it and BOOM, home screen :D
