Apple support - What utter ****

I hate Apple, the company, and their software. With a passion.

But I will openly admit, the ipod is a handy thing, with, at least at the time I bought mine, the most capacity per £. I also got an ipad mini for offshore, as I couldn't be hooped with my Android tablet being so slow and unstable.

I try to avoid iTunes as much as possible though. It is horrible, horrible software.

It is only horrible when you are trying to do outside what it is designed to do.

It does what it is designed to do very well.

Apple support has been nothing short of fantastic for me. In warrenty, mind. Three replacement power cables, a new battery after almost 3 years, and a replacement screen purely because the hinge was a little bit loose.

Sounds like it needs to be with dodgy quality like that.

3 power cables?

It really doesn't, you ask it to do more than one thing at once and it can't cope.

If all you want to do is download the latest "Quicher" single and play it then maybe it works. But try ripping CDs while listening to music and syncing a mobile phone.

iTunes is terrible on Windows (I use MediaMonkey for my iPod), but it's all I use on my Mac.

Also, I've always had a good experience with Apple CS:

- My brother's white iPhone 4 had poor 3G reception compared to my own iPhone in the same network. Booked an appointment online, was replaced completely in store
- My rMBP had a uneven tint on the screen, was replaced over the phone. Can't remember being put on hold for more than a minute. UPS picked it up and I had a new Mac within the week, and they also transferred the extended student warranty over to the new machine
- My iPhone 5 had dirt in the lens that showed up in photographs, replaced in store
- The 6970m in my mum's iMac crapped out three years after we bought it (no extended warranty was bought), they replaced the card with a new one free of charge (a £175 repair). There was a recall program but the guy who handled the repair told me they would have done the same thing anyway.

I don't think it's unlucky, it's an awful way to operate...

Why have a store that I can't walk into and speak to someone, and then why try and charge me £25 for an appointment at said store? It's such a backwards way to operate a high street shop... It's just stupid...

Never heard of that before.

Sounds like you were just unlucky. My recent experience with a poorly sick out of warranty MacBook Pro was excellent.

The majority of stuff on Apple's CS is glowing, but I believe it's all dependant on the store. The practice is the same, but the way they carry it out is left to whoever works there. The two near to me i've never even stepped foot in - even though i've gone through countless iPods, then iPhones, a Macbook and iPad - but i'd not hesitate to use either, with one being very handy and the other being very good. A quick search on reviews of some of the other stores (e.g. Reading) would leave me in doubt.

They fray really easily. It is a poor design, and my laptop gets a lot of abuse in fairness.

The battery most would not replace as it was just low capacity after 800 cycles in almost 3 years, but was done for free.

The screen most would not complain about but they still did.

Apple is a joke, the company I work for are an accredited Apple service provider and some of the stuff Apple do is atrocious so say the least. That brand spanking new Ipad you just bought?? I'll wager it isn't as brand new as you think it is. The so called Genius bar is a major farce! Some of the reports we have had from them stating a laptop or phone is beyond repair when all it needed was something really simple like a new optical drive is amazing. They rip so many people off it's unreal. We are who their customers turn to when they have been done over by them :)

What a load of bull, a company of this size don't play cowboys, if they did it would have been leaked a long time ago.

Email what you've posted here to Apple Care including as much detail as you can as the service you received was unacceptable and they will want to do right by you.

I can't remember ever having to have an actual repair done by Apple, but a while ago I was on holiday with my dad and we realised he'd forgotten his MacBook charger. He went to the store and bought a new one, but had bought a MagSafe 2 (not MagSafe) by mistake. We went back the next day and the guy went and got one of his colleagues who spoke English. We explained what had happened and she was really helpful about it. She went and got the right adapter and let us try it in the store to double check it was correct. We swapped them easily, refunding the wrong adapter.

Overall we were very happy, especially considering we were in an Italian Apple store!

Are they re-engraving the "new ipod" they're sending you?
If not surely they jneed yours back before replacing the screen?

This is what I want to know.
I am suitably confused.
How do you get to keep the engraving on the ipod?
Are they simply reengraving the old words onto the new ipod?
Or will they swap the back or something similar?

Yep, I just made it up to look cool didn't I

If you seriously believe that the guys in the Genius bar/Apple store aren't trying to get the most out of you they can you are deluded. They are ALWAYS going to go for the more expensive option. Time and time again, I have repaired laptops that Apple have deemed as BER (beyond economical repair) when all it needed was something simple like an optical drive or a new cable, that is ripping people off in my eyes.
