Apple to scan images for child abuse

There has to at least a base level of trust, after all they have access to a lot of data.

I'm surprised a lot of people on this forum use the internet at all with the lack of trust.
You can still use something you don't trust. You just keep it in mind and take mitigating actions if possible. I don't trust my car to run forever. One day it will let me down. It doesn't mean I walk everywhere.

It's consistent with every other safety measure introduced post-9/11(ish), just a further expansion of the total surveillance society, introduced one brick at a time so as not to wake up the sheep up. "There's one or two bad apples and to catch/stop them the rest of you have to give up x, y and z." or "To protect you from <insert threat here> we need to take away your right to x, y and z." It works every single time.

The internet about 20 years ago was free and open but is now nothing more than a tightly controlled tool used by corporations/governments to surveil everyone.

There will be false positives all over the place. Apple will abuse it and OFC it will get hacked and used as a backdoor for some malware or a new way SWAT someone.

Yep, I know. I'm just messing.

:)

That's not how this works at all. https://www.macrumors.com/2021/08/05/apple-new-child-safety-features/

It's not in the cloud, it's on device.

But it's been reported that Apple are also scanning iCloud backups and have been for a while. Difference is they're also now bringing this client-side, perhaps to prevent it being uploaded and causing them additional headaches

Surely the only people worried about this are people with child abuse images on their phones?

I really have no issue with it at all.

Imagine typing this and having to operate your way through life, literally zero critical thinking, despite everything that Edward Snowden showed us people are still THAT NAIVE AND STUPID LMAO. Why don't we let the Police have CCTV in everyone's home and have the images scanned by artificial intelligence, they'll be able to spot if you're being burgled and also stop any crimes from being committed, surely only people committing crimes would be worried about this?

What could possibly go wrong with letting Apple access your private photos on the device you paid for, it's not as if there are any bad people who would abuse trust?

Imagine typing that and being scared of every "what if" scenario imaginable.

I don't even have an iPhone, I use Android but if Google want to match hashes, to find people with child abuse images as well, they should go for it.

Don't like it, of all the big tech companies I probably trust apple the most on privacy but this stinks.

The whole comparing hashes from a database provided to them seems like a massive opportunity to open it up to abuse.

I imagine it will be picking up a lot of Japanese hentai as CP. Although British courts atm make no distinction between real and imaginary children, anyhow...

Not remotely close to how this works

like most things apple do, there will be a huge hue & cry about it and then everyone else will copy.

remember the stink when they removed the floppie drive. then everyone did it.
the removed the optical drive, everyone else did it.
they made touchscreen smartphones, everyone else did it.
they removed the headphone jack, everyone else did it.
they made wireless earbuds, everyone else started making them

The list goes on. Apple do stuff, everyone copies.
Spoken like a true believer. Remember when Apple invented rounded corners? I also think they invented fire, mathematics, and disco.

I take it all those complaining about this don't use Android, Google, Microsoft, Facebook etc.

Sure but the majority of folk know where they stand with those providers. Apple on the other hand have made themselves the banner for privacy but are implementing (arguably not the first time) a tool that goes against that, hence the uproar.

And the uproar isn't unjust considering previous history with tools being developed for "good" but have be used for "bad", eg - NSO Pegasus.

Only if the hashes are already in the database.

Or partially matched and then, from what's being reported, the uploaded material is given a "threshold" by an Apple employee before forwarding to authorities or rejecting (at which point where's the privacy if an Apple employee has seen your partner in all their glory).

Not remotely close to how this works

Got a source to suggest that type of material wouldn't be part of the "database"?
