Apple surprised many today by unveiling a redesigned iPod Shuffle. The new design gets a memory spec bump to 4GB for $80.00. The new design (seen below) has no screen but Apple did include a new VoiceOver feature.

VoiceOver allows "[w]ith the press of a button, it tells you what song is playing and who's performing it. It can even tell you the names of your play lists, giving you a new way to navigate your music".

The new unit is on sale now in steel gray or charcoal colors and comes with the usual Apple accessories. Apple generally unveils new products on Tuesday but with this unveiling maybe Apple is trying to keep its followers on their toes.

Looks pretty good, and very cheap. Not that I'd buy one though.

I like how if you ruin your earphones, it forces you to buy new Shuffle ones, due to it having the controls on them. :p

Or any other set of earphones with controls, like the many options already on the market for the iphone...

But with the iPhone, the 'proper' earphones aren't required, seeing as you have the controls on the phone. This however, requires those specific earphones (or so I assume). That's all. :p

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, I didn't read your post properly. ;)

It seems pretty good to me. Having the controls on the cable is good for using it while training or on the bus etc. This was a feature of good personal cassette players, then cd players, and saving you taking it from your pocket to navigate songs is undeniably useful. Makes sense to me. I'm sure if there aren't third party headphones which work with this, there soon will be.

The voiceover thing sounds like a bad idea, however one problem with the shuffle was always that you never knew the name of a song you were listening to. I wouldn't like this as permanently 'on' feature but would probably use it occasionally.

Soon as they get an adapter on the market I think I'll grab one of these and some sennheiser cx300's for the lady. As long as the adapter isn't some ridiculous price

I don't see the desire for this.

No screen, rendering it useless for anything other than the gym

I'd rather pay the extra and buy a nano with a good belt clip case. The headphone adapter/dongle scenario is typical Apple too. Shameful.

Voice over sounds cool, but what happens when you have music files named with a bunch of random characters, especially Chinese symbols etc.

It wasn't that long ago when I bought 8Gb 3rd gen ipod nano for just over £70. Now £60 buys you this minimalistic 4Gb thing.
