Apple vs Samsung, court orders Samsung to show Apple 5 new phones

What are you talking about...

4S - 640 x 960 pixels, 3.5 inches (~330 ppi pixel density)

S3 - 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.8 inches (~306 ppi pixel density)

So basically what you are saying Robbo (to clear up any doubt) is that IF the iPhone used the same display as the S3, it would be called a Retina Display given that "Retina Dsiplay" is an Apple brand which can only be used by them and it goes over their 300ppi for a mobile device?

Just to clarify....

More than likely, it depends what that magical number is. But without knowing that magical number, all though google would probably tell us. They are very close together. So probablyw ould fullfill the retina dispaly equation.

The magix number is said to be around 300ppi for a phone.

Yes, 306ppi~ would 100%, unquestionably, fill the 'Retina Display' requirement.

For all intents and purposes, the S3 has a retina display, it just isn't marketed as so.

I also don't think Apple have a specific ppi number in mind when using it, just whether the pixels can be distinguished by the naked eye at regular usage distances.

Apple say its 300ppi at 12 inches. So yes the display would be classed as Retina.

If you have better than 20/20 vision you could resolve as much as 457ppi at 12"

Just what I'm thinking. I've not known about it until a few days back (on any forum tbh) seems a great idea :)

Its great if passive aggressive is the best you can do.

Except we all know that people that go on about 'ignore' never really use it because the hate not knowing what the person they are supposedly ignoring is saying. ;)

I have to agree with you there.

Though you aren't putting any coherent arguments forward...

If only ignore would hide the quotes as well........

Anyone that is added to my ignore list, that is exactly what happens, they get completely ignored, waste less screen space and means I don't even have to look at the post at all, just move on as if it was never posted at all in the first place, if it is in a completely different thread on something else i.e. "what film did you watch last night" then I view the post.

I don't want to waste my time reading, even just seeing a brief part of a post on something which is complete and utter BS, fanboyish, trolling, repeating the same thing over and over again, can't accept the truth, dumb etc. posts

It has been a godsend for this particular thread.

It's great if you realise the person doesn't really know what they're talking about and apparently just want to wind you up.

I don't know how you think I'm being passive aggressive. I've out right said I think you're a little stupid.

I can assure you I have two people on my ignore list, and things are much better since. **EDIT** What the hell, make it three. You'll note you get no response from me now.

Basically, I realised some time back, there's no point arguing with someone on the internet for which you have no respect for. What have you to win? The ignore list makes it easier to not get involved in this way.

I said retina 'resolution' and I think even the simplest of members on here would know exactly what was meant. I'm sure when Samsung come up with their poorly branded copy then it will be the next generation of human technology. ;)

I'll ignore your camp retort and assume you agree than the 'fanboy' diversion is both childish and pointless.

I am a bit confused here, Retina Display refers to the ppi not the resolution and I own both an iPhone and a Samsung Nexus and they are simply different devices, each as their strengths and weaknesses rather than one being a copy of the other....my opinion, for what it's worth, the Nexus edges the iPhone because it is easier to configure (rSAP compatibility in my case) and while the iPhone retina display is nice and crisp, the nexus display seems better for video, colours seem more vivid....I would imagine it is a matter of personal taste however.

The iPad Retina display however is excellent, particularly for reading....so I think the retina branding is better suited to larger devices.

What I don't really understand is all this Brand Rivary amongst consumers (Apple is better than.....).....I buy a product because I like it, if Apple make a decent phone and it suits my needs I'll buy it, if Samsung make one that suits my needs better I'll buy that.....Brand Loyalty for loyalties sake is foolish, and getting into a big tiswas over it is even more foolish.

Apple only brands their high pixel density phone, tablet and laptop displays "Retina" displays for marketing purposes for less informed people. I have known people go on about how unique the "Retina" display on their phone, only to be shocked to find that other phones have similar PPI displays.

Its a massive selling point for Apple phones and most people don't even know what it really means(think Brawndo and electrolytes!). The other manufacturers have such useless advertising, they cannot even get the point accross to Joe and Jane Bloggs.

Its like with the MacBook Pro version which has a high PPI display and is branded "Retina" for marketing purposes. Yet,Asus had one of their Ultrabooks which has around 15% lower PPI and that is not branded as anything though. However,in reality it looks as sharp.

If other companies want more success, they really need to start advertising their stuff better, even if it means using more stupid but catchy buzzwords, and courting the press better. Most people are clueless about technology.

Apple have asked Motorola (Google) who have agreed to licence some of Motorola's FRAND patents.

....but the agreement also includes an admission by Apple that it is liable for past damages relating to these patents.

But, with at least one set of FRAND patents set aside, we wouldn't be surprised if the rest followed. It may be that Moto has simply decided to pick its fights more carefully, in light Apple's recent legal victory and growing pressure from the European Commission surrounding potential abuse of standards-essential patents.

Well, it's FRAND... Not like they have any real choice :p

Could it also be that Apple have possibly decided to pick it's fights now as well (first quote)? Perhaps this big Apple/Samsung case has knocked sufficient sense into all parties about this whole nonsense... We shall see.

Edit: Also... Samsung S3 sales are well up in the USA. Possibly as a result of the court case - http://www.forbes.com/sites/benzing...-just-help-samsung-sell-a-ton-of-smartphones/
