Appropriate GFX for i7 Build?!

I would go for either a 22" or 24" the biggest

at 24" though keeping it at native res AND good framerate needs 2 cards, if you don't believe me just look at benchmarks of 260's or 280's+ at 1920*1200 on some newer games, the framerate can go to 20-30 and if you like smooth games it will annoy you.

haha sweet more factors :P yeh i will be gaming at 1920*1200, but im sure a 4780x2 can run that res smoothly .. surely

nvidia all the way, would have to be a 295 if u are looking at 4870 x2s

Mr Kingston, no offence but wtf are you on about?
The 295 is top of the pile in pure performance but if you add in the price then the 4870X2 takes the lead by quite a margin. Lets try and stick to the facts and not let fanboyism take hold!

no i have not! LOL people keep telling me things like above 'Run it yes , smoothly no'

:( i just want the best card for 1920*1200 + resolutions's as i use a 24" monitor, cant believe how difficult the choice is to be fair! ive saved this money up so i want my decision to be in confidence

Having actually owned both 4870x2 and GTX280's ( 602Mhz , 615Mhz and 650Mhz versions)

Iam just trying to give you the benefit of my experiences. I am not any type of fanboy for either Nvidia or ATI.
I just wanted the fastest and smoothest gaming card for my PC , I tried
an ATI 4870x2 and a GTX280.
I benchmarked them and then tried some testing with the games I play.
The 4870x2 benched about only 1600 points more than the GTX280
BUT in actual game usage was far less smooth than the GTX280.

So to recap , if you want a fast benchmarking card get the 4870x2
If you want a fast and smooth card for gaming get a GTX285.

Iam sure that others who have actually OWNED both cards may have different opinions.

It depends if you want to put up with Crossfire I suppose, a GTX285 will be more than ample at that resolution but at the same time 4870x2 is the same price and in games that do work well with Crossfire will be much faster, but in games that don't work well with Crossfire you'll be looking at worse performance, so being Crossfire 4870x2 is a bit up and down depending on the game.

Personally, if I was buying now I would pick up a cheap GTX260/4870 and wait for the new generation of cards which should presumably be appearing in the summer rather than splashing out on a current high-end.

yeah wombraider ive heard that said a lot, im definitely looking for a smooth card for gaming as opposed to getting a sick bench.

And mmj uk, that was my initial idea, getting a 260 and replacing it as opposed to buying the top end of the spectrum, but can a 260 handle 1920^ resolutions smoothly?

Yup, tested both in my machine, in all cases the X2 was noticeably superior, so even though it was the much more expensive option (could have got it from a friend for 250) I kept the X2. Recent driver releases (which you will not be aware of as you no longer have the card) have improved things even further. With many commentators stating that ATI even seem to have a handle on the infamous 'microstutter' nonproblem.

Anyone who says the X2 cannot run today's games smoothly at 1920 is talking rubbish (heck mine runs everything smoothly at 2560x1600). If that offends you, deal with it.

THIS ISSSSSSSSSSSSS SPPPPPPPPPPARRRRRRRRTA!

Sorry couldn't resist

:D

I should know better than to get involved, but when I see bad advice being given I feel compelled to address the balance. I mean really, the X2 cannot give smooth gameplay at 1920, what utter tosh.

Although the suggestion to pick up a cheap 4870/260 now and then possibly wait until newer cards are released or grabbing a second for SLi/Xfire would probably make more sense right now.
