Arcane (Netflix series)

Could have done with 2 more episodes to flesh it out a bit better but it was excellent

I guess with the Crow at the end and introduction of Black Rose, the next Arcane but not Arcane is going to focus on Noxus

Finished s2 and thoroughly enjoyed it, cliche but every scene could easily be a painting / wallpaper.

Leaned bit heavy on time travel and multiverse but paid off in the end.

Sad the Arcane story is over, hopefully they cook like this for the next story.

Up to episode 4.
Very disappointed in season 2.
Its like a different show.

From a really well paced, deep, character developing series.

To absolute chaos where everything has been tipped on its head

From 11/10 to 7/10

Agreed. We felt disappointed.

This is like the review on IGN, summarised:
I really hope it picks up. But if the ign review reflects my views so far.. I'm probably going to be disappointed.

Getting tired of Netflix shows starting well and ending in cancellation or decline. I'm considering cancelling subscription for first time in 6 years

Can't believe anyone reads anything ign writes. Used to be my favourite site about 25 years ago.

Well, you say that, but the review reflects what I felt when I posted this on Sunday. One day before their review came out. So I was not influenced by them. when I said the below post.

I thought
the last half was a little confusing, it deviated from the Rich vs Poor to magic/god and even time travel in the space of a few episodes.

A further addition to my mini rant.

Now 4 eps in and I'm watching to complete now not because I'm hooked.

There are too many new characters
Too many characters progressing their independent story lines.
To many new characters I don't care about.

Its fractured,
Over commited to peripheral characters.
And lacking in dialogue (lots of flash bang).
Its become shallow where there was incredible depth.

Possible but not really spoilers
Its a short series. The Mel stuff and her whole family.. Do not like. I'm not invested. I don't care.

The change in jinx/powder to almost be the "nicest" character? Do not like.

The loss of amazing characters (silco being the hardest) and replaced with annoying ones (mels mum)

Think might genuinely ditch Netflix on this one. Just happening in too many series

I loved s1. It's like a different show :(

Basically, for me, the story didn't so much as developed but took a 90 degree turn.

It went from a concise sister vs sister/good vs evil story, set with the backdrop of the Have vs Have Nots, with magic as the backbone of society providing the structure, into a story with the magic part taking centre stage being the plot and gone from that sisters story to this MCU/multi-verse Thanos.

The actual art is amazing, but I found my brain tuned out about half way into Season 2.

I won't disagree that it feels more disjointed, especially as they bring together so many different small story lines. Act1 is the worst for this, Act2 slows that down a little.

It's not a different show, but things have changed - Jayce says as much. It's no longer Piltover vs Zaun, it's bigger than that now, so the story is about the bigger threat. I mean, I don't think I'd be too bothered about that disagreement with my neighbour if WW3 kicks off, you know ;)

Regarding the other points
The Mel stuff gives answers about her Mom's arrival and cements Mel's character (don't want to say too much).... and no doubt gives some context around where the show moves next
The Jinx change is because after losing both her adoptive dads and her sister (to Cait), she's finally got something to care about again. It's all part of her redemption arc and why her relationship with Vi changes...it's discussed a bit more later in the series
Silco was brilliant, but I think having another Silco-type main 'baddie' would feel too similar.

End of Act2 might change your mind a bit, I found Act1 to be the weaker part of the overal season.

Just finished act 3, the final 3 episodes in one go.

Whilst so visually stunning I could cry, it did seem a bit convoluted in places as I think just a bit too much was crammed in. I just felt a bit exhausted at the end of it, maybe it was sensory overload.

Series 1 felt much more focused on the brilliant characters, whilst with series 2 it felt like the characters were spread a bit thin and lacked the same nuance.

Still utterly fantastic and probably one of, if not the best, animations I've ever seen. The animators have definitely raised the bar with this one as I don't know where I can go from here!

Solid 9/10 from me.

The more I reflect on it, the more I agree with you, the last 3 episodes were so intense. Maybe I'm silly, but I felt like I missed some nuaces i.e.

Ambessa/Mel/Caitlyn fight, where Mel Medarda uses to opening in the fight and the black rose to capture Ambessa and she gets pulled into the shackle domain, but then Mel realises it wasn't what it seemed and pulls Ambessa back out? Only for her to die anyway? What did Mel think was going to happen when she "allied" with the black rose, they were just going to give Ambessa a slap on the wrist?!

I was really looking forward season 2. Haven't had time to start it yet and after reading some of the reason comments, I'll wait until I have nothing else to watch.

Too many characters??
TBH I didn’t care about the Mel stuff, but I’ve been told it’s to bring in the bigger world lore.

The Jason and Victor storyline bored me… don’t really care lol

The ekko and old professor dude.. it’s very light weight.

The VI and her lady cop friend was ok…

For me it’s all about jinx and her relationship with VI, isha etc…

I think you may enjoy it more if you just follow one or two treads that you like.. and then follow another on a re-watch

Yeah I'm up to e7 so not opening your spoiler tag yet.

But mels entire family is not needed imo.

I hate how fast this series is.
How the characters are all flatter.
How there isn't really anyone I have strong emotions to.
The mute kid is a plot device to force jynx to change. They don't even have any dialogue!
I wish mel was taken out in the attack on the meeting room in S1 myself and her mum never came. I don't think anything would be lost.

I'd have rather caitlin went full revenge on her own than be guided by a character thrown in at the end (Mels mum)

There's not enough time in 9 episodes to introduce all these characters

For me every character has too little screen time. And especially dialogue time.

I will say episode 1,6 were good. 7 was OK. But again, felt rushed.

I loved arcane s1 for the dialogue, the character development, the relationships seeing how events in their lives made them the way they are.

I mean in E6 caitlyn suddenly changed and decided to help VI instantly. We didn't even see any dialogue on it. She went from wanting revenge to helping. They tried to make it a surprise she'd turn on mels mum. (it wasn't a surprise).

To me it's a different program. And I can almost see it as that. I've almost parked my interest at s1. And it almost has an ending.

Its reminiscent of dragon prince where all the characters were amazing.. Then got dumbed down. Or flattened.

Oh, and heimidinger (spelling?) isa completely ridiculous character almost bard like now after being amazing in s1.

Oh and the jynx and silcos right hand woman fight with that roulette wheel weapon. That ridiculousness doesn't fit the show imo.

Too many characters, too isolated from each other.. For a final season for me.

Characters randomly appear and disappear too. Caitlins partner, the big guy at the start with VI and others.

So having finished this it s2 had some good and bad episodes.

Overall I was disappointed.

S2 was probably a 7/10 and S1 was 10/10.

I think my previous points stand. Too many characters, that have no real story, that I (the viewer) had no feelings towards, becoming critical.
It needed to be 2 seasons with some build up. I wanted to feel something towards mels mum. But just didn't.
All too rushed for me.

If S1 was a 7/10 I'd probably have enjoyed season 2 more. But to go from the best animation ever to a "good/OK" show was a bitter pill. Not as annoying as game of thrones. But if this has been 7 seasons of S1 type and one season of S2 I'd have been raging.

I think the viktor stuff was too deep and convoluted myself, a lot Of shows do this with temporal things.
