Archery

Thanks guys.

Good to know spending big early on isn't the way to go as my budget isn't massive and I'm keen to spend it wisely.

My coach is sponsored by Clickers so he of course mentioned them but they are miles and miles away.

Merlin do have a store that's local (within an hour) so I might book an appointment once I'm ready to buy my own gear as I think i'd like to get hands on with not fully understanding how some of the gear works with each other etc.

Last lesson on Sunday and I will see what the hire kit is like, apparently it's pretty decent but you can only hire it for a couple of months.

Hows it going? Getting a decent feel for the hire gear?

Im getting an itch to upgrade my riser :o

There's been a bit of a delay between finishing the course and the start date of my membership (it starts on the 1st) so I've arranged to head down on Sat to meet up with the guy who sorts the gear then I have an introduction and chance to properly shoot at the outdoor range on Sunday with other club members.

It feels like it's taken forever! must be more keen than I thought.

I've picked up a finger tab, quiver and arm guard just to scratch the gear itch lol.

Going to get stuck into the loan gear for a few weeks and go from there with everything else. I still don't know what I'm after raiser wise really, archery gear really doesn't have many reviews does it?

Think I'm going to start with the 252 round (they have a 252 night on Wednesdays) and looking at the club calendar they have a fair few fun days, club comps and county comps on the go so that's good to see.

What you looking at upgrading too?

Thinking about getting a Win & Win TFT-G or an Inno CXT, I dont need to but just got the upgrade itch. Currently got a Kinetic Sovren and Im doing fine with that.

I shot in my first indoor competition on Sunday in the seniors club competition and won a sliver medal so was please with that and am in the county winter indoor league and am placing 25th out of 112 in the county with this months scores to go. Happy with my progression after shooting for about a year and a half, hope to get outside soon and start trying to shoot at distance

That sounds like good going, I do like how there are different comps and leagues that look to be fairly regular.

I have a Merlin store which is "local" so I'm thinking about arranging an appointment to get a good look at gear in person once I've figured out my proper draw length, bow size and arrow size.

I shoot left handed but the mobility in the left shoulder is shocking lol so I don't think I will be jumping up in draw weight that often which is probs for the best anyway.

Just been trying to get my head around all the equipment and how it all effects everything else lol, can see some tail chasing going on when I try to set up.

How do you find set up and tuning?

Im not that clued up on it to be honest. I changed my limbs and went up in draw weight a couple of weeks ago and only discovered my brace height was too low for the bow, adjusted it to be more forgiving and scored a PB, so these things make a difference. Early on I got a few hours coaching which which I spent one of the hours setting up and tuning the bow.

I started in steps, so I would shoot a bow with a simple plastic rest and sight, then after I got my eye in and shot reasonably I was introduced to a proper rest and pressure button, once I got used to that then I added a long rod which is where I am now. Ive bought an extension, V bar and side rods, so am going to start using that once the winter league finishes and try and get used to that before moving outside to shoot.

I think, being advised to add things in steps means only having to tune one thing at a time which makes things easier instead of as you say, chasing your tail having too many things to tweak at the same time

Yeah that makes sense tbh.

Even choosing arrows can be difficult if you jump down the rabbit hole.

Think I can loan equipment for upto 10 weeks so I should have a much better idea by the time I'm building my bow, no doubt I end up chopping and changing until I find something I really like.

How has the Kinetic riser been? They seem decent value and a good place to start but as I say not a lot of reviews for anything out there unless it's Win & Win or Hoyt.

I don’t have enough experience of different risers to be able to say it’s good at this or bad at that. I do know the riser is more than good enough and is more capable than I am. I was told it’s 95% the archer and 5% the equipment , so I wouldnt worry too much about equipment other than how much you want to spend. A good shop or your club will be able to guide you

Need to get back to this post-pandemic, my old club seems unresponsive so guess I need to find another. Anyone else ever had a decent hiatus from it and any tips how to get back to it - hoping draw weight isn't too much otherwise will have to go back to a limb replacement program. Thinking I should have maybe thought about this while the Indoor season was still in session...

Thanks

Well finally set up with the loan gear and been down to the range a couple times just shooting blank bale and trying to get something close to a group going on.

252 night tonight so headed down and shot 271 at 20 Yards on first time of asking so happy enough with that.

Shooting at 22lb at the moment as it's comfortable but I defo feel it after 30 arrows or so.

Looking at the WNS Vantage AX riser as something to grow into that doesn't cost the earth, enjoying it.

Thats a great score for a beginner, good job! Yeah I started out on 22lbs and it doesnt sound much but because you are using muscles that you wouldnt normally be using, it might ache a little so its no surprise you can feel it even after 30 arrows.

Cant really go wrong with WNS, being a Win & Win brand.
