Are double barelled surnames shellfish?

They're pretty bad. My gf teaches a Siobhan, not pronounced 'Shivorn' but actually see-obe-han. Mia pronouced Maya. She also has a Con, a Kay-Cee, Jedi (with older sibling Levi), Saul, Jaykub and Kai spelled just Ki. Jazmin is another now that I think of it. I work with a Chelsie.

What is wrong with Mia, Levi or Saul?

Mia with the fact that it's pronounced Maya. Levi is just in there as they are the older sibling of Jedi. Saul is the fact that whilst it's a lovely name of Hebrew origin (i think) it's very out of place on the kid in question.

I have a double barrelled surname and it's never done anything good or bad for me. It's also illiteration so it works quite well.

When I get married my girlfriend will take my name and there will be no triple surname rubbish.

My Wife took a double barreled surname because her dad die when she was a child around 8 and she doesn't want to lose her name completely as she was a only child.

To be honest I don't mind at all. The kids all take my surname it was just her name she had a issue with.

I think instead of thinking its a fad or what ever people should ask why they are doing it first.

Had a cousin husband take our surname instead of his which I thought was strange but really if people want or don't want a name just leave them to it.....Does it affect you no so dont worry about it. LOLZ

Mia pronounced Mai-uh/Mee-uh is perfectly acceptable, it has several attested localised etymologies hence the various pronunciations.

Levi and Saul are both common names in Jewish culture and are found outside of this as well. Is the other child actually called Jedi or does it just sound like Jedi...as there are various Jewish names that are similar to Jedi in sound? Jaykub, with that speliing is a perfectly acceptable name, several prominent people have had that name. Jazmin is also acceptable, it is simply a variation that originated in Semitic regions of the Middle East (Jasmine being Persian).

I see no problems with any of these names or their pronunciations. I am not sure how you can judge whether a name is out of place on a child?

Double-barrelled names do come across to me as being from a posh background, but not necessarily selfish.

Let me explain the selfish bit again because I think it's got lost.

I don't mean selfish in the sense the person wants to retain their name partly, I mean because of the future ramifications of giving your children a problem when they come to marry. Do they keep adding on names (which is clearly silly) or forced to make a choice as to which parent they disappoint by dropping one.

Double-barreled names are great. Vastly increases the prospects of your child getting a decent GMail e-mail address.

I was going to start a thread last night about stupid first names but I might as well drop it here.

When I was teaching I had 4 students with the name of Chelsea, Chelsey, Chellsee and Chelcee.
I have recently come across a baby called C-Enna.
In my wifes class she has children called Nafan and LC (yes just LC).

I must admit, Nafan made me chuckle....(although I think it is simply an Arabic variation of the Hebrew Nathan)

I dated a girl called Viqui (as opposed to Vicky) in my youth.

I hate having to spell my forename.

For whatever reason I'm Johnathan rather than Jonathon or Jonathan. Did take my dads forename as my middle name Michael, his dad was a Michael as was his dad lol.

I have a bland scummy surname :( <3 a double barrel.....not.

My ex wife added her maiden name in front of her married name when we got divorced.

An idiotic thing to do in my opinion, just change it back to the maiden name altogether.

I have a double barrelled surname because my parents never married. They always told me and my sister we could drop one when we got older if we wanted to but both names are fairly common so mixing them is a nice change, plus neither of us can really ditch dads since he died.

It's only posh when it's really aristocratic names to start with (especially with a first name and several middle names), though most people I know with a genuine one just didn't have married parents.

Anyone with a double barreled name should be disliked.

Didn't need you as a friend anyway :p
