Are multi-gpu setups as bad as they used to be?

I used to have CF6870 and I remember it being a bit of a pain most of the time and the experience was never really all that smooth.

With the 780 having recently been released, I can see the 680 dropping in price in the near future. I'm thinking of picking another one up when it does (which will mean a new PSU AFAIK), but have the issues of multi-gpu been mostly alleviated or is SLI a lot smoother than Crossfire?
 
My past few experiences with sli have been very good. Currently on gtx 670's in sli, prior to that my most recent sli pairings have been gtx 470' and gtx 275. Power consumption wise, my rig shows a draw at the wall of 430w running the heaven benchmark. Albeit my cpu and cards are currently at stock.
 
Had xfire 5870's then went xfire 7950's and today dropped in 2 780's in Sli. It was rare that I have had problems. Far cry 3 was a stuttery mess no matter what I did with the 7950's but seem great with the 780's. honestly it was rare that there would be problems and usually faffing with things like radeon pro or similar would fix it. Yes you may have to spend a little longer getting it just right but the pros far out weigh the cons in my opinion.
 
Crossfire has improved massively, it was quite poor back when the 6000 series were out, I had a torrid time with cf6950's. AMD have really got their act together the last 8 months or so, no complaints from me now :)

The frame pacing driver is due any time and should make it even smoother.
 
I've had sli 260 and now a 6990 and I can't see me going back to just one gpu.
 
Crossfired 7950 works like a charm in every game except far cry 3. Wasnt always like this it use to run it just fine. Before that i had SLI 560 ti, had a little more hassle with those but again ran whatever i wanted with minimal issue and maximum fps :). To sum up the same experience as everyone else, MultiGPU is much improve nomatter what camp you like be it red or green.
 
I think RadeonPro fixes something else other than the reported issues with AMD CF but to be honest I'm not an expert on it as I don't personally suffer from any issues and... slightly tangentially now: they're massively over exaggerated (not generally on these forums but on others)
 
Moved from 7970 Crossfire to GTX690 and it was like night and day.
Radeon Pro only helped by limiting my FPS, not so good on a 120hz monitor..

If you're thinking of crossfire, i would advise you wait and see what their new drivers do that are due out in June-ish.

I encountered a similar problem with a HIS 7950 ICE-Q Boost. The problem is the TDP limit is too low in the bios. A little too late i know but this will help anyone who has the same problem. Also confirmed by Tommy (infact he discovered it first) with his 7950 Boost xfire setup.

So it was nothing to do with crossfire or drivers on this occasion. The stutter was caused by an incorrectly set TDP limit in the bios.
