Are OcUK one of the best quality forums?

There is a an undercurrent of racism
Everyone's a little bit racist, it's society, it's human nature, it's distinguishing between things.

Everyone's a little bit racist
Sometimes.
Doesn't mean we go
Around committing hate crimes.
Look around and you will find
No one's really color blind.
Maybe it's a fact
We all should face
Everyone makes judgments
Based on race.

It would be better if it weren't related to OCUK

so we could talk about TV eps that arent out in UK yet (which we should be allowed to anyway, cause its not like you'd mention where you got them from, and is 100% not illegal to talk about anyway).

and I agree about the racism thing, it's not racism as such... but it's like having that annoying friend that says he isn't racist, but uses all the terms anyway as if its ok to do because he isn't racist.

and I get tired of people claims Polish ppl are taking all the jobs, lol... get some skills then you won't have a problem (i cant talk, cause i have no skills... but Polish ppl aint gonna stop me getting a job, it would me being too crap at stuff)

I go on a few forums and for me this one is the benchmark. I'm a moderator on a forum for Elvis Tribute acts and fans and we are very nearly as strict as this forum. We allow .gifs for sigs though as long as they're hosted externally, and we have our own photos as our Avatars, with a 200-wide pixel limit.

I'm not impressed with the strictness of the no-links to competitors etc which, to an extent, I understand.

That said, Spie pays for the forums and has therefore every right to have such rules.

I used to moderate and am still a member of a very well known Flight Sim forum, over at Simviation.

The guy who owns & runs the site, does so at great personal expense (and cost to his private life I may add!) yet he has no issues with people linking to sites that directly compete (although in an inferior way imo!) with his own.

The forums are often full of links directing people away from his site!

Ultimately its not an issue to him, his site has a deserved reputation for quality in both its forums and website content.

OC/UK's forums are generally great, the ignore function is all you need for people you don't want to listen to and the admin team seem to do a good job.

But the rules do imo, cost the forums some excellent members who are put off by the sometimes overzealous upholding of the rules.

(If any of the admins want to mail me directly, I'll explain about an on-going problem a friend of mine is having with his account due to imo the above rules issue)

The quality is good even though the quantity is sometimes overwhelming - I'm often away for a week at a time and thats a very long time in these fast flowing boards.

Like everything in life, the forums could be better, but they could be one hell of a lot worse!!!

Keep up the good work guys.

not the best, but one of the best. as much as i hate the family rules thing sometimes it does stop idiots (for the most part) posting drivel like on some forums.

amazingly i manage to get away with it a lot on here. :p

agree with the no competitors/no linking thing. can sometimes be a right royal pain.

I personally think the no competitors rule is one that actually makes sense

dunno what you guys are on about, unless you mean linking to competitors that blatently dont compete with OCUK (like the dvd place based in jersey)

i'd prefer if ocuk just didn't sell games, so then we could say the competitor :p they surely make no money from selling xboxes etc? who's gonna buy an xbox from a PC parts site, lol

was tempted to buy a somethingawful forum account, but they don't accept paypal, clowns

This forum is good at times, but this thread is a classic example of what i think it suffers from. Lastworditism.
I notice that if a point is made by someone then a whole bunch of the same people, the "clique" as someone mentioned will attack the poor person like Nana for having a difference of opinion, reitarating the same point over and over. Then they bring out the arguement enders which you cant reply to without wanting to punch the person in the face like, "grow up" or "if you dont like then go away", "at least i can spell" ect etc.
Because he feels threatened he has to retaliate and then the arguement become thinner and more pathetic.
I always find that theres someone who not involved in the arguement either, who will come in all billybigballs and try and make a name for himself by agreeing with the mods in quite an anal fashion.

It feels as if your so concerned about making an E-credibility on this forum that people will post something they would never say to someones face.
I find myself half writing replys to so many post in annoyment of what someone has said, that i hit the back button and just close the forums, non posting is a better form of retaliation in my eyes, as i dont care, and have better things to do.

Admittently this doesnt happen in 50% of the forum, mostly GD and SC, but then i dont think 50% of the forum actually use 100% of the site, i myself dont.

True, but some more than others. It's also no excuse excessive racism.

I didn't say I'd seen any cases of excessive racism here; I was just demonstrating that it's not quite as simple as RandomTom made it out to be :)

Do you have anywhere in mind? I don't think people get "shot down" in GH much for a lack of knowledge. :)

mainly motors and sport, its always "proove this" proove that" etc

the hardware forums are very good, got allot of advice form it a few years ago when building my pc and it been good is why i stuck around

Good forum and very informative. There are a few annoying things about it, like posts tend to get over-analysed, the annoying 'learn to spell' comments and policing by non-mods.

Sometimes I'm scared to post things incase I get shot down..

This forum has alotta members, and the rules here are good. But every now and then do feel that a mod has been too trigger happy, and there are a few members who seem to think every sentance someone types should be pulled apart and criticised as if it's part of some opposing political policy.

A vast majority of the peeps here are cool and give great advice :D But i do feel like I'm walking on egg shells sometimes just to stop someone going all politics on me, when I really shouldn't have to watch the way I say things just for fear of someone ripping my post apart!

Conclusion; full of very cool people, shame the occasional member spoils the vibe sometimes. There's always a nice way to say something, but sometimes people forget that ;)

Yeah some forums are full of elitist types "oh you must do this or you'll get carpal tunnel and die" or "you must hate someone along with me or i'll hate you"

This place is pretty open most of the time, yeah it's all good.
