Are people today too susceptible to group pressure?

Attention whoring. Lack of familial and community connections. Living 'blah' lives devoid of any meaning and purpose. Going through the same motions every day, for what? To get where and what exactly? Endless and endless scrolling and swiping as the years just flies by.

So a bit of this gives them purpose and attention.

There is definitely an increased pressure to be seen 'conforming' to whatever right-on message is currently on trend. Be that Metoo, BLM, #freePalestine or whatever.
Thinking back it wasn't always the case, for example back when plain old LGBT was a thing.

Online maybe. I'm 41 and have literally not once in my life bumped into anything I had to conform to. Not any of the messaging you allude to have I ever bumped into IRL.

This is true but back in the days before social media and the Internet era, somebody would tell them to shut their face and you'd never hear about it again.

This is the thing that is so annoying about today. You cannot escape somebody bringing some grudgement up and always some protest movement happening. "It's gone viral!"

Nearly everyone is a bleeding activist today.

taking the knee is not an effctive anti-racism gesture, who changes their behaviour as a result of seeing that ?
Maybe someone that doesnt realise that the things they do or laugh about are not just banter but are actually a very bit racist?

Like booing at an anti racist gesture for instance.

How anyone can say Ive had enough of this anti racism crap without thinking about what they are talking about. Im fairly sure there are more people that have had enough of that racist crap!

People have always been susceptible to peer pressure and I was always one of those who didn't give in to people constantly trying to get me to do something eg
Smoking
Alcohol
Apple-ing (going in gardens nicking apples)
Postmans Knock (knocking on doors and running off)
Gang fights
Voting for Politicians that do bugger all
and so on ...............................

Making feudal gestures of fealty to a political ideology is not "an anti racist gesture". Especially not when the political ideology is itself racist. I've had enough of that racist crap.

I see it more as people are finally tired of the bs and standing up to it :') not to mention the Internet has connected those who would feel unheard and unable to stand up for themselves, everyone else is hopefully supporting them for the right reasons.. not just out of herd mentality but.. I'm sure there are those people too... besides there were plenty of activists and movements in your time I bet, you just relied on tabloids to tell you about them ><

"Are people today too susceptible to group pressure?"

People have always been ready to light their burning torches and grab a pitchfork and gather in a mob and march to the house of whoever has riled them up and burn it down. Today it takes new forms most seems to be driven by social media lately. Some of the reddit groups I dip a toe into are full of sheeple all of a hive mind anyone who dissents gets stamped upon until they're either driven out or fall inline until everyone follows the same groupthink and of course people want to fit in. Nothings changed really just the form of communication.

A few decades ago though you didn't get police joining in on the protests they're supposed to be policing, whatever their beliefs they were professional enough to remain neutral and just do their jobs. Maybe it's the widespread ownership of cameras (phones) and cancel culture which has them fearing repercussions if they aren't seen to virtue signal, maybe it's the recruitment or the training.

Anti racism is a bad political ideology is it? OKAY!

BLM is only cloaked in anti-racism, it's ultimately all about division.

Tony do you honestly believe what is being touted as as anti racism is the same thing as being against racism? I expect you've fallen victim to the linguistic trick so often employed.

Don't like antifa? Well you're obviously pro facism. Don't like BLM and their antics? Well you obviously hate black people etc.
