Are these REALLY this cheap now?

Imagine trying to sell a scooby like that, all the scum that'd come along wanting a test drive...

Try selling an £800 306  that was an experience. Weird builder bloke who was telling me about how he'd written off 3 cars in 2 months then asked if he could take it for a test drive. 17 year old lad who turned up with (and this is no exageration) 14 of his mates in 4 seperate cars to "'ave a look mate". A weird south african guy and his mother who every 5 minutes swapped their story, first the car was for her, then him, then his brother , about a dozen phone calls just asking "your best price on the 306?"

Lucky it sold on the third day as I was giving it until the end of the week and I was just going to scrap it.

A local lad I know has a Series McRae with 270k on the clock, and it's still on it's original turbo (previously owned by his boss and then his bosses brother).

People forget that before Subaru got into the rally lark they were favoured all over the world by farmers due to thier robust mechanicals.

If its looked after properly, it'll go forever. When I sold my front seats, the guy came to collect them in his Impreza. It had done 170K (1999 UK'er). My wife and I didn't believe him. It was in just as good condition as mine at 60K. The only problem was the seat had collapsed hence needing my old ones.

He also said it was on the original clutch which I wasn't too sure about but he and his wife were both adamant it was.

Reliabilty is only an issue when you make changes from manufacturer spec.

IAM puts the figure at 8,700, as of 2006. I'll see if I can find some more numbers..

BBC Newsnight says 8,000 also of 2006...

I think the figure often used now is 12k a year for first 3 years , 10k for the next 3 and 8k after that

Yes they are. The downside is that you have to drive a scooby. And driving a scooby means wearing nothing but subaru team clothing. For the money they are very fast, particularly round the twisties.

If I was looking Jap I'd be after an Evo though.

I've noticed the price of these too. I love the old skool styling.

I was going to trade in my Type R for one... until I called up my insurance company  They would not give me a quote! I'm 23!

Think i'd rather an STi Type-R TBH.

This is what I was thinking by prefering the Type R WRC Limited. This has a roof vent and those all important blue alcantara front seats.

However, DCCD makes a Type R twitchy and lack of ABS makes it worrying when it comes time to slow down.

P1 doesn't have DCCD but does have ABS. The rear brakes on a P1 are circa UK turbo which is a bit off-putting. It doesn't even have 2 pots on the back - AFAIK anyway.

As most of the posters feel classic Imprezas aren't much cop anymore it wont' matter to you but this year and next theres going to be lots of V5 and V6 Type Rs into the country - they no longer have to go through SVA.

I think Xmas 08 will be the very best time to buy.

It's time to bin the crappy Honda's and get a P1 Drex :D

As awesome as the P1 is, I've been there and done that with scoobies, and I genuinely find the 'teg more fun. Scoobs are awesomely capable cars, and there isn't much that can touch one when the weather is nasty, but truth be told they are a little boring, and the steering lacks feel.

I would never slate them though, they are awesome cars and I do miss mine in the wet

Unless I'm completely mistaken, that's what a P1 is: an STI type-R 2-door redone by Prodrive? Do you mean the type RA? That's the seriously hard-core one.

And yes, P1 prices have collapsed in the last two years, so they command only a small premium on a similar age STI import. But keep saving until you can afford a newage - bugeye STIs are about £9500 these days.

IIRC The P1 was a 'numb-er' version of the STi Type-R. I've been taken out in both (not driven, though.) And much preferred the experience in the Type-R.

the problem is with the impreza becoming cheaper, is that every year it gets closer and closer to the chavs car budget:(

Been there for a while. You can pick them up for as little as £1500. I'd point out it happens to all performance cars.

A nice clean un-buggered classic won't start breaking the bank but enthusiasts will start paying more for minty fresh examples.

edit - P1 is a V5 "adapted" for Uk roads.
