are we being embarrassed into not taking our change?

I only feel awkward about it in a pub. Not sure why. If a pint is £2.95 I'll expect my 5p back but I'd be happier overall if the pint was just £3. That way I don't have to feel awkward about taking the 5p or not, theres no uncertainty from the person at the till as to whether I'm going to take it or not, the pub makes 5p extra/pint and they save time by not having to faff around with customer's change. And I don't end up with a pocket full of 5ps at the end of the night.

And I can't just say "just keep the 5p" because that implies I'm telling them to keep it personally.. which is an insultingly low tip to give :P

One of them really ****s me off because if I buy something that's marked up as 99p, he'll say it's a pound.

I don't think the problem is the penny for either of us, I think he's just too ****ing lazy to open the till and get me a penny.

More than likely he's just pocketing the pound.

The "99p instead of a £" is a legacy that forces cashiers to ring the item though the till in order to issue change.

i've topped up my phone by $10 in 5p's that was about 3 months worth from getting on the bus every day thats much better than the interest from most current accounts over a year. I've got about $2 in 1p's at the moment too so if any shop keeps are mean to me next time i'll buy some sweets and eat them while they count all the change! now that is entertainment :D

I always get it. Generally end up bunging it all in one of the Sainsbury's self checkout machines to pay for a pack of gum or something. Means I'm not losing out on the money, and it's an easy way to dispose of the change buildup.

I wait for my change, no matter how small. It all goes into my change jars. Collected about £30ish so far.

yeah I have amassive change jar that counts the pennies as I put them in. I'm around high £37. getting close to £38. Making sure I get change is a big deal for me and I wait for it.

I don't think shopkeepers are selective about not giving penny change. they are usuallly autopilot and certain for big chains that have exact procedures in place, so they follow the same pattern all the time. So whether the change is 1p or £10. They'll handle it the same.

I have a little metal bucket by the fireplace in my lounge which is the change bucket and any small change get chucked in there.

The only time I don't wait for my change is if I'm paying the takeaway delivery guy and it's less than £1 ...

Not exactly the same but this old trout who works in a Total garage nearby that I used to use accused my wife, when handing over a £10 wanting to buy a bottle of milk, of just trying to get change and refused to serve her. My wife quite upset just left and told me so I went back.

I went in about 20 minutes later got a bottle of milk handed over a £10 and she gave me my change so I asked to speak to the manager who just happened to be out back. My wife is Taiwanese (I am white) so I pulled the racist card.

We got a letter of apology from Total and £100 fuel voucher and were informed that the same lady had been sacked because she had been on her final warning.

Not sure how this would work in large retail shops anyway. Generally tills should be balanced to the last penny. If all of a sudden 10 people didn't collect their 1p change, the tills would be unbalanced with no recollection of where it came from.

I must admit I do tend to give small change to whatever charity tin is at the till, though lately I've been saving up my 1p's. Reason being a girl from work is on Deal or No Deal, yeah I'm a bad person hoping she gets 1p just so I can spend the rest of the year throwing pennies at her :D

Lets just ditch the entire monetary system and move to a complete global credit system.

Getting sick of waiting for this antiquated crap to stop mattering, then we can finally have a valid reason to ID every single person from that point onward (Perhaps a tad overboard here, heh), I don't even mind the possible problems, the benefits are too great.
