Are we British or English?

Wish the Scots would realise that too ;)

What? That we have the neighbours from hell like the Welsh do? Too right we know :p

I'd consider my nationality as Scottish and will put it down on forms as such but technically I am British and due to my mothers nationality I could legitimately call myself English I suppose but I tend to hush that up. After all everyone has some family secret they are ashamed of ;)

Oh never thought of that. Does that make me British, Northern Irish and Irish?

It makes you whatever you want to be. I'm British because I consider myself part of the population of Britain, I'm Northern Irish because that's where I was born and people in the UK will know that Northern Ireland is different from the Republic.

To anyone not from the UK I'm just Irish as very few other people seem to know that N.I. exists lol

BTW - who else is up for forming a Celtic Football team, taking the best players from Scotland, Wales, N.I. and the R.O.I. for the next world cup? Might give us a good chance to qualify and challenge England ;)

I was born in England, therefore English!

People argue that makes you sound like someone with ancient values on racism and being ultra-patriotic but tbh I would have thought scottish people would rather call themselves Scottish, French French and the Germans; German, so there is my belief. :)

In fact if England play Scotland, I would rather the English had banners with St George's cross on it than Union Jacks (as ALL of Britain, and Northern Ireland, come under that flag, not just you!).

Point of order. Wales isn't actually represented on the Union Jack. Personally I think they should slap a big dragon on the middle of it to correct this oversight.

*cough* Cross of David, red diagonal on white background

If the Scots can be Scotish, the Welsh be Welsh and the Irish, Irish. Then that makes me most deffinitely English, or perhaps an 'Englanger' - I always liked that little foreign misnomer ;)

Wales had no explicit recognition in the flag because Wales had been annexed by Edward I of England in 1282, and since the Laws in Wales Acts 1535-1542 was considered to be a part of the Kingdom of England. (The present-day Flag of Wales and St David's Cross are both 20th century inventions, the former based on a Royal badge and the latter on the arms of the Diocese of Saint David's.)

amen brother!! I'm up for that :) I'm sure we could at least field a team of 11 good players from 4 countries. :D

Errrr ... I thought the "Red stripe", also known as St. Patricks flag I think, was added in 1801 when Ireland came into the Union.

I knew some really stuck-up arses once (friend's ex's parents...) who, upon having to complete a form, would cross out "British" on the Nationality section and replace it with "English". Really made my blood boil how up their own they were.
