Are you a supermarket snob?

I went shopping in a waitrose last weekend in outer london and found they were about to open a fresh sushi counter! It appears some branches of Waitrose are posher than others

I like Aldi, sadly my nearest one isn't in a great part of town and attracts some people I'd rather not be too close to.

There's no Waitrose nearby either, or Morrisons so that rules them out. Asda is closest but full of chavs, the local Sainsburys is ok, though I don't use it much. It's not too far to a couple of Tesco stores which I use sometimes.

Sorry bit of a thread bump but thought it wasn't quite worthy of a new thread.

I went in to Morrisons a couple of days ago, don't normally shop there, we are in Norfolk and when we are here we usually go to the Aldi in Fakenham, but decided to try out the Morrisons.

I've got to say I would not be I'm a hurry to go back.

When at home we shop on Tesco, here Aldi, I prefer Aldi generally although Tesco is good for getting more variety, good for beer and random stuff, Asian ingredients and the like, it's also by far the nearest supermarket to us.

As for Morrisons, fine the selection of meat was good, but everything else not so much, very few own brand things, the own brand things they did were not particularly cheap or good, in fact the shop was expensive for what it was, more expensive than Tesco I felt.

We got their top end sausages for example, were more expensive than Tesco and nowhere near as good.

Their Pizza's (again premium ones) were worse than Aldi and a lot more expensive.

We got their own brand garlic mayonnaise, it was ******* horrible, ended up binning it.

Only in instances where I’m after a very specific item that is only sold at a particular place. Otherwise I’m not fussed as long as it’s reasonably priced.

Example - the self branded fruit trifle that M&S do in a pack of 3 pots, absolute taste sensation, it’s like an angel is kissing your tongue.

Sainsburys
M&S

These are my main two stores, Waitrose is a complete con, same produce at a massively inflated price.

I used to use Aldi/Lidl in the beginning because they were so cheap and the hit in quality was worth the savings but these days the price is barely cheaper other supermarkets and the quality is still sub par.

Definitely a bit of thread bump and agree that it was not worth the new thread.

I know which two shops you are referring too. Certainly don’t shop in either due to location being out our way for our weekly shop. We tend to have a weekly shop 80% of the time delivered these days. It just allows us to have a bit more free time to ourselves. When we either our off work, we choice to go to Aldi/Lidl as we seem to get more for our money but genuinely willing to shop in any supermarket if we do. There is one Asda in our city i choice to avoid if I can. Not because it’s a Asda, more because the shop it self is run down, don’t like the lay out and 80% of all tills are self checkouts. That was someone’s job.

Though I wish Lidl put their reduction stickers over the original barcodes. I usually put my hand over them but since the original barcodes scan.

But noticed last week that their reduction stickers for day before or a few days before (ham) went down from 30% to 20% and the day’s dated stuff from
60% off to half price. Sneaky

Our experience of Morrisons is....variable to say the least. I know people who have raved about their meat quality, but the few stores I've been to I've noticed more than one suspect packet of meat on the shelves. I think I was with my dad once and he picked up no less than 5 different meat products and handed them to a staff member as they were going while still being in date. I know we've had a whole salmon from them before and it wasn't the freshest.
Other times, they've been fine. Though I've always felt their strengths lay in your more typical 'british' stuff, so I'm surprised that their sausages were a bit naff.

We've never been a massive fan of tesco - though we have found things in their that we do like. We're generally more of a Asda/Sainsburys shopper, with Aldi/Lidl creeping in a lot more in recent years. Though I've found that both Asda and Sainsburys have dropped in quality in more recent years.

I agree mostly about Waitrose - I would say it's better than your more typical supermarket, but not massively so and the price is more so it's not really worth it. That said, I will say I have more luck finding more 'unusual' ingredients in Waitrose than other stores so to me that's where its strengths are.

To answer the original question however - I'll generally eat anything I think it's nice, I don't care about brand or price, so I see myself as the exact opposite of a supermarket snob. More a supermarket pragmatist. It all comes down to price/yum factor

As an example, I like Mcvities dark chocolate digestives, I also like the Lidl ones. I prefer the Mcvities biscuit, but think the Lidl ones have nicer chocolate, so I'll get the Lidl ones. Plain ones, I'd go Mcvities.

I was in Asda the other week paying for my stuff at one of the self serve checkouts when I noticed two young black girls having a disagreement with on of the workers who didn't want to sell them a bottle of alcohol because she thought they were under age. One of younger girls accused the the staff member of being racist at which point a security guard was called and they were both escorted off the premises. I finished my business not long after and as I was walking back to my car I saw the two girls outside the store, one was in tears and the other was on the phone presumably to one of her parents.

The whole thing reminded me of that recent incident of when Asda security staff member told a woman with an assistance dog she couldn't bring it in the store
