Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead

To both of you I did wait for a lot of patches, still not that great, I was in a clan, most of the mods aren't that great imo and I cba with games and mods I would just rather it was built as it should have been out of the box.

However this is a good video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkYpi-mqRjY&feature=related especially when the tank fires at the start, that is what Im talking about :p

It's just disappointing that the devs at bohemia didn't think wait a second some of the sounds (not all) are really poor let's fix this, I just think a game like this could be so epic, I would be in heaven if I could get a cross between ARM2 and Bad Company 2 (mainly the sound engine and dectruction from BC2) that'll be the day.

Uhhh the hi fi sound mod is really, really good. Although I agree the sound engine in BC2 is better, I don't think it is a real priority for what is essentially a port of VBS2 for a commercial audience. Hollywood style sound is not required for ARMA 2.

I do hear they have re-written the sound engine for Arrowhead though, be interesting to see. The sounds have always needed modding since Operation Flashpoint.

Arma 2 is one of my favourite games, I personally can't wait for OA!

Arma 2 is also one of my fav games. im going to start playing some of those awsome SP campaign missions to get me ready for OA.

anyone know a good headset less then £50? i had a seineiser that broke recently and a headset is a requirement for joining havoc clan, well any clan.

Microphone surely, not headset? You better off buying the cheapest branded mic you can get (fiver or so) and spend the rest on good headphones which will be far better than any headset.

The sound mods are debatable, why do you not think better sound is required? I'm not saying hollywood, just realistic. At the end of the day their selling this as a game, they need to make sales tbh I can't imagine they are getting much their PC only and its a targetted audience too, they need to do whatever they can to improve sales, saying OH ARMA2 is a simulator the sound can be crap and mediocre is not an acceptable excuse lol

All I'm saying is that ARMA could be epic, sure it's not bad in it's current state but it's got a long way to go and if they don't push themselves they aren't gonna be making money

They sound mods are pretty much required, like I said since Op Flash the out of the box sounds have been sub-par, but I find most games are tbh sound wise.

Hi Fi is very good in my opinion much better than most high budget commercial releases, just like the Dynamic Range mod for Operation Flashpoint before it. The bohemia games have always requried a bit of modding to make the most out of them thats for sure. Sure you may say the mods are no good but its all subjective, a lot of people agree with me though I am sure.

I think arma just isn't everyones cup of tea. If you like atmosphere and depth over slick polish then it will be the game for you. Sure there are a few bugs and it runs a bit pants sometimes but its an incredibly complicated bit of software with amazing scope.

I am the sort of person who lists STALKER, Mount and Blade and Arma2 as the best games in recent years. The big hollywood style releases are normally good but I get bored of them after around 8 hours of play.

Well thanks to Oxy pointing me the direction of RIP i will be able to enjoy OA when get my preorder through.

I love games which let the community mod them into new and often better games. Its like watching a mined diamond turn into a real beauty :). Stalker is the prime example

I used to play on the OcUK server, back when it was locked and you needed a password.

I was only there for a month or so, but it was some of the most fun times I've ever had on a computer game. Can't remember the dates when I was playing, but at one point, someone was describing on Vent, a fight between (i think)drug dealers that was happening outside their window. Was quite surreal.

My bedroom roof developed a massive leak at around the same time(cowboy builders :-( ), and the PC got a bit wet and didn't want to play after that.

If you are starting all that up again, I would love to be involved.

Hope everyone is doing well.

take care

tony

I could never get into ARMA or ARMA2. I loved OFP too.

I think you have to be in a frame of mind, and as current FPS i play is BFBC2 etc, it's hard to switch back to the slower more relistic gameplay. But I shall definately try again over the next few weeks.

after seeing this thread i reinstalled arma2 ,first time my comp didnt run it well.but since then i got a 5770 and a q6600 and with patch 1.05 it runs nice, plus they seem to have fixed some of the single player bugs so i can actually play it :D
my biggest prob is multiplayer everyone knows what they gotta do but i don't ,its ok if i join server as its just getting going but if not im by myself.all alone in big dangerous world lol
looking forward to arrowhead, hopefully i keep up if comp can still run it ..

What's RIP?.

Tried to find a video, hard to find good ones but the first part of this when the air support starts firing on the city, shows you how atmospheric it can be

Awesome footage, watched that all the way through and as you say - very atmospheric looking and sounding.

Really looking forward to this, preordering now. :)

Does anyone know if the game will make use of Quad cores?.

Looks like it:

Engine
What, if any optimization improvements can players expect in the expansion (or in future patches?)
We constantly optimize the engine, the results can already be seen in ARMA 2 1.05 and Operation Arrowhead will benefit from all of these optimizations made to date. We continue improving and optimizing the engine, especially with further multicore optimizations to fully utilize 4+ core CPUs. Vegetation rendering is more optimized in Arrowhead already and we also design the entire environment to be less resource hungry. For comparison, the Chernarus map in ARMA 2 contains over 1 million objects (mostly due to realistically modeled dense forests), Sahrani in ARMA 1 has around 300 thousands, we aim to be somewhere in between on the Takistan map due to the different type of environment so it is pretty safe to say already that Operation Arrowhead will treat gamers with a smoother ride than ARMA 2 itself.

I played ArmA a lot back in the day. I bought ArmA 2 when it came out too, but could never get into it due to the horrid performance I was getting with a 3870!

I love the multiplayer in ArmA, and played Evolution an awful lot. It was ace :) Is there anything similar in ArmA 2, or will there be in Arrowhead?

Just to confirm the latest Arma2 beta patches are doing a lot of tweaking for multicores and threads which can be followed on the BIS forums. I moved from a dual ([email protected]) to a quad ([email protected]) recently and it was maxing out the dual regularly but spreads more load (seemingly) over all 4 cores for a smoother ride. Note disk access time/speed can impact the game performance as there is massive streaming of data throughout the game, usually seen as micro stutters, though the latest patches help a lot.

There are plenty of Domination servers in Arma2 and I'm sure they will follow in OA. There is even a Domination based on an updated Everon map from OFP which is awesome to play if you remember it from 2001 ! There are Jackals, Merlins, Chinooks and countless addons and new islands out there.
