Army Physical Fitness Test

Woah. Just checked the Royal Navy pre-joining tests:

Age Male - PJFT (mile and a half)
15 - 24 12 min 20 secs
25 - 29 12 min 48 secs
30 - 34 13 min 18 secs
35 - 39 13 min 49 secs

I'm pretty sure I can pass that on a treadmill now.

Bear in mind you will need to better that when you get in raleigh but it should be a piece of cake by the time you're in week 7 of training, just make sure you can do the pressups and situps required aswell, the bleep timings they use make it slightly harder than just pumping them out to your own beat.

If you're used to using a treadmill it could be hard to pace yourself when it comes to running it around the astroturf so make sure you get a bit of road running in before you start aswell so you get used to pacing yourself

Not thinking of joining the military or anything.

On walking pace, I believe that the fastest racewalkers will cover a mile and a half in about 10-11 minutes. So yes, it's walkable for some people.

Used to get called all sorts when I was a kid. Having 'sorted myself out', as it were, in my mid teens I should have never let my fitness slip again. I'll take it as a term of endearment in this case though ;)

lol tbh i hadnt even thought about it, fat git is just a phrase isnt it i never really took the two terms as seperate. It was supposed to be a nicer way of saying it rather than just 'fat' but i geuss there aint no nice way to say it. Sounds like your really doing well anyway m8 and all power to ya. I started out about where you are now. Down to 17%bf and still loosing about 2% per week so should hit the golden 10 in a month or so. Keep at it! But i still dont think training in this way is very good for fat burning imho

btw guys - it used to be a 1.5 mile warm up run as a squad then you do the 1.5 mile timed best effort - i.e. you run out to a point then the clock starts and you run back - you don't just start off doing a 1.5 mile 'fresh'

It seems to have now changed to an 800m warm up then the 1.5 mile timed best effort also you do the pushups & situps immediately prior to this test - so basically anyone getting onto a treadmill in a gym and jogging for 1.5 miles is just kidding themselves.

get into a field, do the pushups & situps - jog out 1.5 miles then go for your best time - if you're in your 20s then aim to do at least 9:30 - sub 9 mins should be achievable if you train hard.

'Git' does get thrown around as a friendly term -'fat git', 'old git' etc. Some people probably won't take too kindly. I think it literally means something like 'useless', 'worthless' or 'contemptable'.

Anyway - regarding these tests - I don't see this as a training programme in itself - just another way of checking progress. I get encouraged when I can see improvements so I like to set targets and monitor progress. To me, increasing the weight I can lift or running for faster and longer is a more desireable target than losing X amount of weight or reducing body fat percentage. I'm sure those things will continue to happen as a consequence of the other stuff I'm attempting.

They wouldn't do it in 6:30. If they could then they would be useless at almost any other physical task as they'd be fit for long distance competition in the Olympics.

I thought the classic super-goal was the minuite mile? If thats even possible then surely ~4-5 mins isnt ridiculous? But i agree no para should be so physically diminished as to have the physique of a distance runner.

Lets face it, this guy -

Is hardly gonna be much use building a bridge, or in hand to hand combat, or lifting a mortar assembly.

not really m8, if you cant run 9mins flat out you shouldnt be running

what absolute rubbish

Got to agree with player. 9 minutes flat out is SUPERHUMAN!!!!!!

Although the 400m is regarded as a sprint you aren't quite flat out. If you look at the state of an athlete after a 400m race you know it is impossible to run flat out for 9 minutes even if you are Michael Johnson.

Hicham El Gerrouj holds the world record for the mile at 3mins 43secs.

If anybody is able to run 9 mins flat out then Michael Johnson (perhaps the greatest athlete in history apart from Ultra Extreme) should be able to.

On his way in his 9 minute run he'd smash the world mile record at 2mins53seconds. Which is of course, UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
