Asking someone where they are from

If I asked you where you are from and you said some where abroad I would first give you a silly look then say. Christ thats a bit of a journey. Do you do that everyday?
Which could be seen as quite patronising to someone who didn't speak good English or didn't understand your British sarcasm. So you could then be accused of being racist because of that, because its antagonising the other person. Or perhaps its ok to be mildly racist if done with a laugh and a smile Tony?

Every example we can think of can be twisted to be racist - that's why there is so much push back on things like this.

She doesnt have an african accent she was born and grew up in the UK. Are you seriously not getting it yet.

It might be your human nature but it is not the default human nature.
It's in everyones nature.

There is the story from the native Americans that talk of the two wolves, good and bad. Whichever you feed more becomes your personality.

In Biblical terms it would be the battle between the spirit and the flesh.

One of the sad things about this situation is that people seem to think the default personality is perfect. That it's not normal to sometimes be clumsy with the way we present ourselves or speak. I'm a great believer in treating others how I wish to be treated myself.

I've had people ask me bluntly what is wrong with me physically. One old woman, a stranger to me, came up to me when I was in town when younger and spoke over me, asking the person with me, "can he play in the garden?". I could have easily made that in to an issue. But unlike many people I don't think people are perfect. For me its more about their intention.

It was a charity event not a get to know minorities event.

Again, forgetting the conversation  We're not simply debating syntax.

In this case we are. Do you know how many times I have asked someone where they are from and just at the end I think. God I hope they dont think I mean their ancestory.

I have non white friends that I dont even know where their non whiteness comes from because it doesnt matter to me. If you want to talk about your parents or their parents lifes fine.
