Asking someone where they are from

Mate you freaked out when I called you a northener because you lived outside London..

Freaked out?

You: "Oh right I forgot you are from up north. Its foreign muck."

Me: "Up north? got me confused with someone."

You: "Im from south London nearly everyone is from up north to me. Do you have an odd accent?"

Me: "I'm from Somerset originally, though lived in London for a chunk of my life and back in Somerset again now."

Simply factual replies to a rather odd line of comments from yourself.

If you think I freaked out something not right going on with your perceptions.

EDIT: Like a certain other poster here I think you are projecting yourselves on my replies and seeing it through that filter and/or a filter of what you want me to be saying/feeling rather than what I'm actually saying or how I'm actually reacting.

If you read her stuff on social media/website she is certainly capable of being eloquent and fairly knowledgable about her heritage compared to that exchange which does raise my eyebrows a bit. Though again without being present it is difficult to know the demeanour of the conversation.

EDIT: Again don't know the context but the palace does a lot of research into people they are dealing with - it is possible someone got the impression she liked to talk about her heritage from her online presence so asking the question was encouraged.

That seems plausible, the Queen consort likely does get briefed on the people she's due to meet; perhaps the Ladies in Waiting do too as they're there to assist with things running smoothly... or indeed perhaps she was asking because she was due to introduce her to Camilla?

Do you have all posts categorized? I was agreeing with your post.

Strikes me that this wasn’t at all racist. If she was so horrified by the exchange why on earth didn’t she actually say so or leave. Why did it have to be shared on twitter.

This woman has just destroyed the reputation of an elderly lady because she sought and took offence where none was meant.

The lady could have simply answered the question first time rather than string it out clearly on purpose in order to draw a comment onto which she could latch her and her apparent offence onto.

Do you really think that if you went to Africa with a name like Dave smith someone wouldn’t enquire as to where you were from? It’s not rude - it’s human intrigue and interest in other humans - we find the world and those around us and in it fascinating.

The whole thing could have been handled better by the both of them but things like this dilute actually genuinely awful racism and doesn’t help anyone. It simply further drives division.

She was from Hackney. Not Africa.

Unless you havent heard the UK is multicultural there is no reason to expect non white people to not be british.

Hmmm... this is looking like pure grift (especially given the context of them previously running to the media), they tweeted this today:

"It is not our wish to reveal the person involved"

But they'd already tweeted this 4 hours earlier:

"a member of staff, Lady SH"

I mean they might as well have named her in full, how many Ladies in waiting are there? Like less than a dozen and their names are all publicly listed! It's not our wish to reveal the person... but we did so hours ago anyway.

Secondly, given the event only happened yesterday it doesn't appear that they've given Buckingham Palace much time to deal with it before just going public, but they want to handle it kindly? Sure.

Lastly, they refer to her as a member of staff, so they know she was there in an official capacity. The Charity woman was dressed like this, it's hardly surprising the Lady in Waiting therefore may have thought she was African or of recent African immigrant descent as it plausibly looks like she may have been wearing some form of national dress:

Only racist thing about all this is the black woman in question pulling out the racist card. Ridiculous, but nothing new.

Sure this Lady SH could have asked where is your 'family' from, but when she asked where are you 'really' from, any adult with a fully developed brain would know this meant where is your family background from. Nothing racist whatsoever.

Just because she was born in the UK and lived here, doesn't mean she's British 100%, when clearly she's not.

She could have just answered the question but decided to be awkward and make a scene about it.

I don't think it is quite that simple, though I think what got the person's back up was not something intentionally racist and the core part not really a race issue but seems to have been turned into one - but unthought of behaviours, which are possible for a person to identify and improve on, are a huge issue with this kind of subject in general.

This whole thing has exposed the ugliness on both sides IMO but won't be see like that by the activists and the likes on either side.

Next time the palace staff should start walking around with a placard strapped to them - John McClain style.

That'll give the stupid bint something to moan about.
