ASRock 775Dual-VSTA for Conroe (Core2) with both AGP/PCI-E and DDR1/DDR2 support

The 4X can bottleneck higher end cards, from what I've heard though most cards only drop a few % between the 4X and the 16X interfaces.

@beast: You might as well go ahead and see what you can do with your 5300. Remember that this motherboard can only run at max speeds of 5300. Your fancy 6400 RAM will only run at 667mhz ;)

That is until you decide to get a new mobo of course. A DS4 would work well with the system you say you're getting in your sig.

Hi Darg, I've ordered the geIL 6400 RAM because it's at a good price this week, and when I'm not on the breadline I do fancy an upgrade to a DS4 and perhaps try my hand at a sensible bit of overclocking. But for now, Why I'm part of the dual-vsta posse :D

Same here. If I didn't have just a couple hundred to spend over christmas I'd be getting the same ram as you right now. Let me know how your overclock fares with that.

I'm still getting the annoying high pitched freeze that requires a restart every 30-60min of gameplay. I even had my first few the other day while just browsing the net. I think my ram is deteriorating.

I've updated to Bios 2.20 and like somebody else mentioned the bios setting
for the CPU fan is now stuck on full speed regardless.

I tried a bios reset on the Motherboard pins but it's still the same.

I was thinking of getting the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA and have two AGP cards lying about - Radeon 7500 and nVidia GeForce 3 Ti200.

Will either of these work with the ASRock 775Dual?

Also, will my 512MB PC2100 RAM work with the ASRock 775Dual?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

@Ice Tea: Stick with 2.10, the only change documented with 2.20 was "speedfan optimisation" which as far as I can see just causes the fan to be on the entire time ;)

@bernie: I see no reason why the graphics and memory shouldn't work though the cards are very old now. 9800Pros are $50 if you look around. That'd give a drastic improvement over your 7500. I know I've had both cards ;)

Cheers Darg.

The ASRock has had some really good reviews and was just a bit sceptical that I could upgrade my PC to Dual Core by just buying a motherboard and a Dual Core CPU, assuming my PC2100 RAM and my old graphics cards would work.

I've got a 1500Mhz AMD Athlon and it is beginning to go a bit wonky. Plus I've recently bought myself a PCI TV card and the CPU is feeling the strain of it all.

Does the ASRock and Dual Core CPU require any more power from my Power Supply Unit? I've got a 400W PSU so I hope that is enough!!

I reckon you'll be alright. If you don't have a meaty Gfx card then 400W will be alright I reckon. The c2d chips use less power than the old type anyway.

400W is plenty for most systems. Especially conroes. You'd have to be running power-hungry graphics cards in SLI or Xfire to really push a decent 400W system to its limits.

Just bought a DS3. The thought of the 4X PCI-E hampering the gfx card (even if only a little bit) inability to use my geil 6400 RAM to the full, and finally the dodgy O/clocking abilities of the mobo made my mind up. But I will always treasure the memories of being in the dual-vsta club. Must get my tattoo removed now too. :D

I've decided to stay with 2.20 as i've overclockerd my D 805 so i think it's best
i keep the fan on full speed :D

I need to readup on the best way to test for stabilty.

can you post what you changed in the bios please ? and what cpu speed are getting ?

All i done was go into

Advanced
CPU Configuration

then change Overclock mode too async
then change cpu frequency too 170

and it boots at 3.42 and i can browse the internet and convert AVI to dvd without any problems though i've yet to do a stabilty test with Prime95 or Orthos.I had it up to 180 / 3.52 but as soon as the computer gets warm it becomes unstable and keeps rebooting.I'm back on stock until i have fitted the rest of my gear.

@beast: Did you ever get a chance to run the Geil 6400 on the dual-vsta? I really want to know how the ram fared as I'm hoping to someday get that and maybe stop my comp from crashing!

@Ice-Tea: What cooler are you running on the CPU? From what I've heard of the 805s they should be able to get up quite high without dying. It may be the mobo though of course. What temps are you getting on 180 and 170?
