ASRock 775Dual-VSTA for Conroe (Core2) with both AGP/PCI-E and DDR1/DDR2 support

Well, I had a whole post ready to submit and FF decided to crash :P

Anyway, jist of it is, Im at stock settings. I have now downed the memory voltage to Normal, and am currently running blend orthos. 4 minutes and counting :D

What voltage is set to each Low/Normal/High setting? At what setting is cooling recommended? (Or possibly needed in this case)

One last question, whats Bank Interleave meant to be set to? Mines on 4-way.
 
Bilston, I think the high setting is 1.9v. I came across an article/post somewhere but I can't find it :o I'll have a look and post back if I find anything.

I'm using BIOS v2.40

Just tried the 2.4 bios, it still errors on orthos at 3,3,3,12 with 2.0V (high).

Has ANYONE got this board to work with cas 3, Im wondering?
 
Ive got to be doing something wrong here. Just failed orthos at 4,3,3,12. Am I getting the values wrong?

In CPUz it says Cas - 4, Ras to Cas delay - 3, Ras Precharge - 3, Tras - 12. I have set in the bios DDRII667, although that isnt displayed in CPUz, maybe thats it?

FSB is at 266. DRAM Voltage at High, all other at Auto.

Think im gonna rum memtest instead. Just to rule out the Processor.
 
One thing I noticed in CPUz is the SPD Timings tab.

In there it states that 333mhz is 5,3,3,15

Is the SPD tab listing the timings the board can take for a given speed? If so, that maybe why Im getting errors.

Or it could be the juice, yeah :)

No, it's the safe setting the manufacturer has programmed in to make sure the RAM runs stable at those speeds. The RAM sticks include a EPROM-chip holding information about the stick. This SPD (Serial Presence Detect) works as a unit storing information about the RAM type. The idea is that BIOS can read this information and this way tune the system bus and the timings for a perfect CPU-RAM performance. That's the theory anyway.
 
So how come the memory is programmed with 333(DDRII667) timings of Cas 5, when this stuff says CL3 in the product line?

This is damn confusing :((

No, it's not really. There is a standard (JDEC if I recall correctly) and it says that all RAM will boot up at a certain voltage and a certain speed to make sure it's compatable with as many motherboards as possible. I think you'll find the JDEC standard is [email protected] for PC5300 RAM and that's what the Ballistix is programmed for.

The reason GeIL had so many problems with Gigabyte DS3s in the early days of Core2Duos was that they ignored the JDEC standard and programmed the rated timings into their RAM. It worked fine once you had set the voltage high enough, but it wouldn't boot without a cheapo stick of RAM in it first.

It should be stable at 5-5-5-15 1.8V though. If it's not then the RAM could be faulty.
 
Well, set it to the above, ran orthos and left it for a while.

Came back to a blue screen.

RMA Time? Or should I wait to try another board? (want to wait for the 650i Ultra, ideally.)

Edit: Just read around a little, seems the Asrock is just a bit finicky. I'll dial the memory down to a stable 266 mem setting and wait for the 650i Ultras. Thanks WJA96

Have you disable Spread Spectrum and set V-Link power and IDE strength to normal? I left my memory timings to auto and bios perfect settings for my PC3200. What speed did you have the memory running at when it crashed earlier with Orthos? They're only a few variables but it should be relatively simple to ensure everything operating within spec. Double check the divider and mem speeds in cpu-z.

p.s If I recall I believe you need to set the mem to 533 configuration to get the right set up.

Those settings are all what you suggested setting them too.

With 533 mode, the memory is effectively in 1:1. At the moment it is Orthos stable with 4,4,4,15. DRAM voltage set to High.

I think its just a mismatch of memory and motherboard to be honest, will know for sure once OcUK start stocking the 650i Ultras :)
 
I have the asrock 4core vsta mobo and I'm thinking of getting the Crucial ballistix pc5300 ram, I'll be upgrading the mobo in june to something a bit more oc friendly, will this ram run ok in this mobo till then, albeit at a lower rate? as long as it's stable and I can stick with my current oc of 2.4ghz (e4300 cpu) then I'm cool with running it a little lower until I upgrade my mobo.

Mines fine at 266 setting, 4,4,4,15 DRAM HIGH :)
