Assassin's Creed: Unity

Apart from performance, it is actually quite good! much better than Black Flag and 3.

Performance is shambolic though. I had a cutscene in a dark room with 2 people and I was getting 22fps, then it switched to a chase scene across roofs with a massive crowd on the screen and it was hovering around 40!

A few things:

1. Worst hair I have seen in a game for years.
2. I don't think I have heard a French accent yet!
3. Texture pop-in is atrocious.
4. Was the combat always this slow?

Also I can already see a massive improvement in gameplay. Had a mission to sneak in to a party, but was seen by a guard. In any other Ubisoft game I would have got a game over screen, in this I was 'ejected' and jaust had to try again.

I've not played it yet, but I can answer 2 and 4 (having watched developer videos).

The reason why there are no French accents is because it's through the Animus, the user doesn't speak French so the Animus automatically translates. They picked British accents because it had a more old timey feel than American accents.

As for combat, it's because they redid the combat system. They wanted to make it less forgiving and arcadey, but in order to not ramp the difficulty level too much they slowed it down.

Having read this thread I'm rather pleased I decided to give this a miss.

Assassins Creed IV kinda breathed life into the series and took it in a much better direction and despite slightly dodgy optimization I thoroughly enjoyed that one.

This looked dull right from the first video I saw. Sure it's pretty stunning in places but looks so utterly boring and judging by some of the issues across all platforms it really makes me worry about Far Cry 4 and whether I was right to pre-order that.

It would appear as though Unity is a total indication of the state of AAA titles today.

If it was a pudding it would look amazing. But you would rapidly discoverer when eating it that it was basically a mountain of aerosol cream and not much else.

Don't buy it. Force them to patch properly and learn from the mistake it or lose money.

Perhaps it's just an architectural problem with PC's? the consoles have unified memory, PS4 has 176GB/s or so of bandwidth, Xbox One is meant to be around 100GB/s either way, PCI-E 3.0 16x offers 32GB/s... so despite having much beefier processors/GPU's they have quite a bottleneck in terms of communication between one another.

Just speculating but it seems to be a common theme that large open world PS4/Xbone ports are running badly on PC.

Lazy devs imo, the humble PC is more than capable.

Well I have to say that I've been playing it for a few hours tonight and despite the odd slowdown here and there I am really enjoying the variety this game has.

Yeah, the actual game isn't half bad. Much better than 3 and Black Flag. The murder mystery missions are great, and there is a lot more freedom within missions now too, though still getting the dreaded desynchronisation occasionally.

Story is still nonsense though... And I would rather poke my eyes out than play the 'rift' segments.

The 176gb/s of bandwidth the ps4 has is used by the gpu and the cpu though. On a PC the 32GB/s for a pcie-3 slot is(it's only 16GB/s each way) is pretty much more than enough. The massive majority of bandwidth use is accessing textures to and from graphics memory. On the consoles there is no separate memory, on a PC this is well on a 290x this is over 300GB/s of bandwidth.

That pci-e 2.0 shows next to no performance loss when bandwidth is halved suggests it's not all that relevant.

Of course when you design and optimise if you had 300GB/s bus you may use it more and have better overall performance but as things stand it's not the major bottleneck in a PC, not by a very long shot.

The only real place that requires massive bandwidth, gpu accessing memory, PC has way way more available to it right now. Even with overheads it's significantly higher amount.

Ubisoft have just done a woeful job optimising and a large portion of that, judging from constant glitches everywhere, is time, could easily be simply skill of the people involved as well or likely a mix of both. It really doesn't look remotely good enough to warrant this level of performance, performance is also **** on both consoles by all accounts.

I will for the life of me never understand the need to rush a game out pre xmas.... with almost everyone calling it a buggy mess, you'll have hundreds of thousands if not millions of people decide not to ask their parents for it, wait for it to be fixed... and it will be cheaper. Finish a game, sell it in AAA state and you'll get better reviews and more sales. If you push a game out in this state it will get panned everywhere. I mean, if you have to push out a game like this, release it on December the 20th so people pre-order as xmas presents early and parents have little choice but to keep them. The timing of this release coupled with the severe lack in polish just makes no sense at all.

After playing this for a few hours on Uplay I closed the game and got a message about the season pass in the summary window that pops up.

It advised me to click for more information, then took me here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/324330/

I think Ubisoft may have forgotten they aren't selling this game on Steam in the UK.

"Please bear with us."

1) I wish there was a bear with you, grizzly spec.
2) Why the hell should people bear with you when you should have released this in a decent shape in the first place?

started it up last night just to try it for the first time

didnt download properly so had to verify files - which then redownloaded the whole game again :p
ran game for first time - crash
ran game for second time, was getting FPS of around 25-30 (i5 4ghz / 8gb / 6950) everything on high lowest AA
fps drops to 15 in cutscenes (in game ones) - pre rendered ones sit on 60 (seems capped?)

played for around 10 mins then got stuck on a NPC (think it was supposed to play a cutscene) but I was running on the spot and couldnt move :p
so gave and up went to bed

graphics do look nice though

The framerate really is insane. I can put everything to low and it is the same as when everything is on high. And in Paris around Notre Dame I am getting some 18-25fps. It is the worst optimized game I have seen yet.

The story is alright, but I preferred Black Flag. As for the optimisation, it sucks. I'm playing everything maxed out (except MSAA at 2x) at 1080p and am getting between 40 - 60fps (vsync on). As Paul_cz says, there doesn't appear to much difference when changing options, so I figured I may as well set them all at max.
