Assassins Creed Valhalla will feature fictional enemies and beasts from English myths and tales. This is not something brand new for the series, as some of the latest installments featured legendary mythical creatures and gods drawn from other traditions as well.
Starting as a historically accurate stealth franchise (as much as possible in video games), Assassins Creed evolved into an action-packed fantasy series, going as far as portraying ancient Greek and Egyptian gods along with creatures taken straight out of myths. Whether it proved to be the right direction for the franchise or the wrong one is debated by fans, but either way, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will also be infused with fantasy elements from both English and Norse Mythology.
According to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s narrative director Darby McDevitt, the 9th-century England present in the game will be enriched with various mythical elements that have already been featured in previous videos and gameplay demos. Even the initial reveal trailer had a glimpse of Odin, the elder god in Norse mythology. But since the events of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla mostly take place on the shores of the British Isles, local fantasy creatures will also be featured in the narrative. For instance, players will meet the Black Shuck, a monstrous black dog from East Anglian folklore. The exact origin of the creature is lost in time, although it is often referred to as a devilish beast, and players will be able to encounter and fight it in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.
