Assetto Corsa

@mikeym Rift is the best compromise / all rounder of the three IMO. You'll have to fiddle with game settings and supersampling to get the best image out of it.
A strong argument could be made in favour of the Oddyssey if all you're doing is sim stuff and movies though.

Pimax should be the best, but you'll have to compromise more on in-game settings to achieve a decent framerate, as well pay a fair bit more as you say.

I'd probably go with Pimax and be prepared to turn settings down if the extra cost isn't a big issue. Rift would be second choice.

Thanks Petey, my heart definitely says pimax and gives me time to save up a bit more between now and when they are available plus more reviews and use experiences will be around. This is probably what I will do and also will allow me to benefit when I get around to upgrading main hardware..

If rift/odyssey get a price cut while waiting I might reconsider as an medium term solution :-)

Just found this thread. :)

I'll make my way through it all over the next week or so but can anyone recommend some good "essential" visual mods to improve the eye-candy? According to usage graphs it seems my system, although fairly average (specs in sig), has bags of performance spare in both the GPU and CPU departments (for now atleast, although I appreciate this will likely change when racing a full grid).

I'd like to improve the AA too if possible, what's the best way?

Cheers folks.

What are your current settings?

From what I can remember, everything is dialled up except smoke and reflections. I did a quick search as soon as I installed the game and that seemed like a good starting point.

Edit: oh, and I unchecked the "fast AA" option because it sounded like a compromise.

You shouldn't really have any aliasing issues if you've got 4xAA on. You're right to turn off FXAA, as it's crap :D

Have a look at the various graphics/PP filter stuff like the Natural Graphics Mod and GBW Suite which also has a reshade option for example.
GBW isn't for online use though. But you can still use and might like it's PP filter(s).

Thank's Petey, I'll install the mod manager later and have a mooch.

I have 4xAA enabled and while I can easily live with it, some things still show a fair bit of aliasing, like the fence posts lining the pit lane exit on Laguna Seca for example.

Paging @Borsch
I believe he posted some Nvidia settings tweaks to help with stuff like that a whiiiiiiile ago. Could be wrong.

Definitely install content manager. It's not just for managing mods, it's a complete alternative game launcher with many tweaking options.
It also saves you time by not having to wait for that long old startup/shutdown thing that you get with the Kunos launcher.

My solution with regards to AA is to use Nividia's DSR and it works well at 1080p. However I do not think gtx780 supports DSR and in any case it will probably struggle with it :( (I'm running 1080ti)
I did not spend much time with the other solutions like SweetFX though.

No problem, Borsch. Thanks anyway. It's the shadow of the fence rather than the fence itself that's badly aliased but it's a minor issue really and doesn't affect my driving other than when exiting the pits - if I exit the pits quickly it can all get a bit funky.

I bought this last night and tried it in VR. I cant seem to get very far. I can't keep up with the other cars. I have turned on the assists but still I cant seem to get the cornering quite right. I'm using an Xbox controller but I do have a wheel but it's such a faff to setup. Maybe I'll try it later. Anyone got any suggestions? I tried one race with the Fiat 500. I guess I could decrease the AI skill level.

I haven't raced against the AI yet but I think I read somewhere that it's pretty tough. If you have a wheel though you'll be much better off using it. Mine has been clamped to my desk and hasn't moved since I bought the game last week.

I just had a look around my driver settings and DSR is present and works!

I've set it to 1.5x (and selected the appropriate new resolution ingame), forced 8x AA (in the game's video config file) and 8x SMAA in Sweetfx and my aliasing issues have disappeared. GPU usage now looks like the card is actually doing something (58% to 88% range after 3 laps) and FPS is unhurt, locked to 66FPS (my monitor's refresh rate is 66Hz).

Marvellous, thanks again.

Edit:
Replays were suffering a bit - GPU usage was up to 98% - so I've knocked the AA and SMAA back to 4x and kept the new DSR res. That'll do!

Edit2:
Did I say that'll do?
Up to 1.78x DSR (virtual 1440p), 4x AA, 4x SMAA and things seem to be just about hanging in there at 66FPS on the replays. Should be fine for solo runs.

It looks phenominal and is making me want to upgrade to proper 1440p (card & screen). If I hadn't seen such riches, and all that. :)

Anyway, I'll eventually stop fiddling (Sweetfx is addictive too) and get some laps in, but alas not tonight, I've had a shandy or two.

Imagine racing a real car with a pad ;) Certainly possible, but your lap times will be far from optimal. There is no rubber banding AI in AC, they are supposed to provide challenge even to a seasoned veteran, so yeah you have two options: 1)decrease the AI skill level. 2) use the wheel. The latter is the way AC was meant to be played, AC will give you many nuances that you wont find when using the same wheel in Forza7, say.

Great to hear, enjoy! :)

I'm getting the hang of it now. I have an ancient Wheel, an R440 by Saitek. If I try to use it, it will cause the game to crash but I installed the default windows drivers instead of the saitek ones and it works now albeit without force feedback. It is so much easier with a wheel. I am winning races now. :)
