Astral 5090

one thing being forgot here is the 5090 astral has a much larger heatsink then the 4090. this is why the higher power draw is able to stay within the same temps as the 4090. a larger heatsink and 150 watts more does mean more heat is being pushed into the room and away from the gpu which causes far more of an increase in room temp. this is the entire design and why the 5090 is a beast while staying well within thermal limits/throttle range :)

no no no.........grief. The heat isnt the issue, the card isnt the issue. Everything runs fine. I am stating the 5090 runs much hotter than the 4090 yet the temperatures in the software are the same. Therefore i do not believe the temps sensors are telling the truth.

Isn’t this explained by (1) more power = more heat, hence an hotter room, and (2) the 5090 necessarily being more efficient at cooling than the 4090, hence being able to shift heat off the card better?

Just to really hammer the point home:

You could have a card that uses much less power than the 5090, but is far less efficient / poor at cooling.

In which case, the room temperature will certainly be much cooler, but the sensors in the PC might show higher temps than the 5090 despite the lower power use.

Hammering the point home isn't possible when the lights are on but there is nobody home. OP cannot understand how his room heats up more with 5090 than a 4090 as in 600W of heat rather than 450W going into the room. He has then concluded that because the 5090 is generating more heat by virtue of the fact it consumes more power and his room heats up more that somehow the temperature sensors are showing incorrect temperatures. It is simply impossible to communicate with the OP that the additional heat in the room is all perfectly normal and to be expected.

I think we might be being too hard on "Simon Blakemore" here (cool username by the way, who uses their actual name?) as he's clearly suffering from heatstroke.

A major symptom of heatstroke is an "altered mental state", including confusion, disorientation and delirium. So maybe his Astral really is cooking him up good and proper? Stranger things have happened - my soundcard talks to me sometimes!

For all the noobs here who rant on how they just now it all...go read. The second head line on the page 5070 hits 107 but its reported at 68...hmmmmmmmmmm. I am sure you will find some more BS to fire back at me to say im talking sh!t but hey ho. Game over case closed. As i said for the 53 time, there is no way this Astral 5090 is running a the reported 70 degrees no matter what wattage it uses. I fully understand more watts = more heat which is fine, and the card is more efficient at moving heat through the top of the card so it expells through the AIO but the reported temps are BS.....................!

That's not related to your issue.

I don't know how nvidia reports the hotspot, but normally they would have several sensors available across the die and the hotspot is the uhh, hottest spot. That's not something you can feel with your hands, or in your room, since it is highly localised.

With nvidia 50 series cards nvidia removed access to this, you can't see it with GPU-Z or hwinfo anymore, but like I said, that doesn't mean anything about how hot your card is generally.

Heat dissipation will be the result of how much energy the card is pumping out and how good the heatsink is at dispersing it, but energy doesn't magically disappear so that heat will exist somewhere afterwards.

Your 4090 used a lot less power than a 5090.

You also need to consider the games and loads between the two, and other factors such as ambient temps and any other changes in the PC. If it was a one to one change and nothing else shifted, there would still be numerous factors, we're in the middle of a heatwave that's unlike anything we've seen in lord knows how long. A game could technically result in a 70c load at 40% usage or a 70c load at 100% usage, you're not exactly being clear in what you're doing with the card vs your prior 4090.

Just because a 4090 was reading 70C under load even if you match EVERY other circumstance, that doesn't not mean a 5090 at 70c will pump out similar heat. The energy output is much higher, but that is not the case -- there's a ton of other factors involved and certainly so right now.

But hey, jet fuel doesn't melt steel beams, am I right?

If your argument was that you think the GPU is using a lot more power than is recorded you might have a point, but it isn't.

Mine never goes above 50c but I have a custom fan curve and 3 140mm d30 phantek fans blowing cold air on it.
