ASUS 3080 TUF GAMING OC - Full power draw and Instability at Stock

So after being in a queue since the beginning of October I finally received my 3080 2 weeks ago.

Since doing a clean install of windows and running everything at stock. I found the performance not being to the standard it should be.

I was getting quite low FPS in games where easily I should be getting more. Also I found games glitching and freezing up.

I investigated this via GPU-Z and found that the card at stock was using the most power as possible and was hitting max operating voltage making the performance take a huge hit and bossy clocks barely rise not even up to 1900mhz at times which is awful.

I have requested an RMA on the card to have it replaced but the only thing that looks to help is that I ran MSI Afterburner OC scanner which amended the voltage/frequency curve and now the performance seems more stable and hitting the rates I expect without the VOp message in GPU-Z however I should not have to do this to have a stable GPU.

I do have an odd issue hear and there but very minimal. Just wanted to let people know if they are having the issue to try this in the meantime.

Also is anyone else having this issue?

I think that is bad testing from ASUS on this card.

Hey thanks for the response.
I have the below:

CPU - Ryzen 5 5600x
RAM - 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 3600Mhz
GPU - TUF GAMING OC 3080
MOBO - ASUS TUF GAMING X570

I can try TimeSpy at stock to let you know but I would be interested to see what GPU Z says for you when playing a game like Warzone in terms of click speeds, board power draw and whether you get Vrel and VOp pop up while playing.

That is where I noticed the issue as it was the first game I played and had issues with Freezing in menus etc.

Thanks everyone for the help and links.

So I actually upgraded this week to 1000w Corsair PSU which is obviously overkill but please see my stock results from timespy which I feel are very underwhelming.

Also I have a separate cable for each 8 pin on the GPU.

The fact that FPS Drops while gaming and that full power draw is in use as well at stock profile with no OC just out the box seems a reason to be concerned.

I literally plugged and played after reinstalling drivers and just have max power draw and leads to instability and not the performance expected especially that this is an pc where you think the chip would also have better performance.

It seems I am just unlucky with this one.

Definitely going to RMA in hope for a resolution.

I understand what you mean about the lottery, however 2 things I will say is that firstly as I purchased the OC version you expect the chip to be able to boost higher, however still the issue remains that when gaming and just running the card at stock OC bios it has full power draw and getting VOp message in GPU- resulting in glitching and freezing as well as frames dropping to below 100fps at times and also due to power draw the features like DLSS etc also don’t even activate or have effect. Something is definitely up.

@Game - I average about 110 FPS on ultra settings 1440p which then drops to around 90 after playing at stock for about 15mins.

@FlyingFish - VOp means the card has reach max operating voltage meaning the card is drawing the max wattage it can to operate, however it is not normal for a card to do so thus causing the card to downclock and freeze up when game also resulting in low FPS.

Hi all,

The support on this is overwhelming and I very much appreciate the support.
Please see the below link with my PC cooling and stock voltage curve, I have taken off the case lid to see clearer.

Nothing in my system goes above 65c and GPU usually is around that or lower.
CPU is usually between 55c and 60c while gaming.

@Joxeon is correct, you should be hitting power limit way before max voltage is even touched.
I am very much leaning toward an issue with the card itself.

Power draw at idle is 0.9900V which is far too high.

@xPETEZx I understand what you are saying it's just so odd to me that installing a cars at stock regardless of chasing points or any OC has an issue where it reach max power draw with FPS drops thus also not allowing me to use Nvidia features such as DLSS.

@FlyingFish - Thanks for all your info and you investigation. I just expect a card to just work without having any need to touch or even install afterburner to help with issues.

I have also left all nvidia settings as default.
The VBIOS is up to date as it came fully updated.

@Joxeon - Ran DDU when I initially installed and also a few times after.

I just feel more comfortable knowing that if the issue arises with my replacement then I guess we can blame Nvidia.

Hey, just an update on this and thanks for the concern and advise once more. Like I said at stock the frames and power usage is just not right with the card freezing up in games. It’s not normal behaviour haha.

Turns out they received my card back on Friday and shipped me a new straight away.

Arriving Monday.

Fingers crossed we’ll see how it performs.

Hey. I know it’s more than a year late. So new card came and still seems to say VOp at stock with no afterburner installed. Game also stutters and glitches out. Got 5900x and 32GB of vengeance RAM. So odd. I just don’t get it. I have a top system so it’s just very strange.
