ASUS 42" ROG Swift PG42UQ

Oh nice, the updated firmware has improved things quite drastically!
Think I’m convinced!
@Baddass Did the new firmware do anything for the colour calibration you were struggling with?

TFTCentral review now live :)

Nice. Looks like the claimed brightness can only be reached at in the cold 10000k preset. That being said over 800nits in the normal 6500k preset is still very good.

thanks to that review I now know that SRGB was designed for 82nits brightness and then after checking their aw34dw review I found that yea I am actually already using my monitor at 80ish nits (I guess my room must be very dark compared to others haha)

Yeah I normally calibrate to 100 or 110 cdm2 with an x-rite.
So happy to see I wouldn’t experience any brightness issues.
Just colour calibration I’m not sure about at the moment.

An excellent review as always @Baddass!

The Uniform Brightness in the newer firmware, the ability to turn off ASBL and the hefty heatsink make this monitor a better PC alternative than the LG C2 (without mentioning the inclusion of a DP1.4 port and the extremely low input lag!).

The mediocre EOTF tracking in all HDR modes it's probably the only really disappointing part of this monitor. It's even more disappointing to consider that the HDR Gaming preset in the older firmware was the most accurate preset and you can't use it with the new firmware! At least the brightness and grayscale accuracy in all HDR modes it's quite good.

This is actually turned into a harder decision than I had anticipated and its all because of that damn AG coating. Take that out of the equation and I would be all over the Asus (even with that ugly logo emblazoned chin...) but part of the appeal of the LG is definitely the vibrant, poppy colors and blacks.

I need to see these side by side, hopefully Best Buy will stock and display both (although the monitor would likely be in the computer department and the c2 in the TV department lol).

I registered just to thank @Baddass for reviewing the PG42UQ. I was disappointed in the ABL behavior and uniform brightness feature with the v028 firmware, but I am super happy to see both were addressed in the new firmware! Thanks Baddass for following up with Asus on the issues/unexpected behavior.

My current display is XG438Q and I did preorder PG42UQ. Now I just have to figure out how do I find the space for second 40 something inch display. :)

You’re very welcome and thanks for registering just to say thanks :) I’m glad Asus addressed that quickly too!

@Baddass, I ive seen in the specs that it has a SPDIF connector, but looking at the images of the screen connection panels Ive not been able to see one. Could you please let me know if indeed it does have one and where it is?

Thanks in advance

You can see it in the image on the product page, far left. Unless that's just a marking on the plastic panel and the connector is missing from the metal plate? Or it's the coaxial type rather than square optical next to the two hdmi ports?

It looks to me like a coaxial digital interface rather than optical. (3.5mm jack)

Edit: Yeah it could be Mini toslink as well and probably is (rather than coaxial, they are rare sight these days).

Well I've pre-ordered one from OCUK.

Baddass, has there been anymore back and forth with Asus on firmware or is everyone happy where it's at with V031?

No further

no further plans to change anything that I know of. But either way they will make it available on their website for simple user updates anyway so it’s all good. Purchasing via the ocuk affiliate links on TFTCentral always appreciated to help support us :)
