ASUS ARES ATI RADEON DUAL HD 5870 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD

I've bit the bullet and bought a couple.

At least shipping is quite cheap :)[/QUOTE]

Reminds me of the time i put a psp in my amazon basket by accident and clicked '1 click checkout' instead of 'remove'. This would be a slightly worse accident though!

Wrong Quote ?

No its not the best but it was Asus intention for it to be but Sapphire beat them to it.

And i do own 2 of those sapphire toxics.

Lets see what XFX has to offer.

Who cares what their intentions were? They released after sapphire with a worse product that costs more. :o

That is not in dispute because that is what i have already said.
But things don't just get scraped because it does not beat the competitor liked they hoped.

For those of you who were gob smacked by the power connections on the Ares this card has in fact got LESS pins going into it then two stock HD5870’s.

2x Stock HD5870’s = 6+6+6+6 = 24 pins
Ares = 8+8+6 = 22 pins

I think Asus needs a bit of credit for how they have designed not only one of the cleanest PCB’s I’ve ever seen but through the use of quality components and high tech PWM’s and capacitors have made an already efficient design more efficient.

Actually since the 8 pin is just a 6 pin with 2 more ground pins the Ares has 9 12v power lines while the 5870 crossfire have 12.

However the cables themselves are rated differently so it's swings and round abouts.

The power rating of 8+8+6+PCI compared 6+6+6+6+PCI+PCI are the same.

So all the power connections are saying is the single Ares is rated for the same power draw as 5870 crossfire which is not surprising.

The second biggest concern - after the cost of this amazing card - is if you had the cash to put together high end components (dual Xeons, dual 4GB 5870's, 12GB RAM, etc) your going to end up needing dual PSU's. Then checking how many amps you have for your socket/s for overall PC power consumption. Otherwise anything less than 20amps (2400W) will mean you'll need a new circuit box to avoid it tripping out.

I don't know why manufacturers don't state the usage voltage at point of purchase because you only find out once everything is running on a voltmeter yourself. There must be people too worried to buy these higher-end components because of this issue and lack of clarity. Of course you can read all sorts of reviews, but some people don't have time to this research and want a simple reading.
