ASUS MAXIMUS III Formula Review

Ummm.... too much effort for 5ghz o.0

In the world of extreme overclocking we always try to find what any new platform can do, yes 5Gig is not that much when you can easily do 4Gig on air, but I have only just started testing extreme so I would think there is some more in this setup, all the info gained helps gamers alike to overclock there systems, not to these extreme levels as we use extreme cooling.

Anyway just wanted to give you a little insight into the world of extreme.

So would this board be beneficial for my i7 860?
It's a good question fizzle-187 and one that could be debated! :)

My off the cuff remark would normally have been that this board is probably OTT for a beginner/nOOby overclocker as they are unlikey to tap the full potential, so in essence they would pay a large premium for nothing . . . well apart from loving the look of the board and braggin rights of course! :p

Having said that I think that the ROG series of boards do contain some nOOb friendly overclocking features like CPU Level Up, Mem Level Up etc. These added options are aimed pretty much at the beginner and make the task of getting more speed from your kit easier.

Personally I wouldn't recommend this board to someone who is doesn't know how to overclock unless they were rolling in money £££, instead you could choose from several more keenly priced boards and save yourself £50-£70 and start doing your homework and learn how to overclock!

Good arguments Big.Wayne. So I doubt this board is really for me since I'm new to overclocking. However, this does not put me from simply buying as you've stated since I've got the money to blow why not on a shiny new motherboard. It's the foundation of my PC so I want it to look good. I can't help myself from being attracted to the board, so I guess that's my only reason from buying this board since I'm in love with it! Although, it may not suit my needs but you know we only live once! I also love having the best and quality bits for my hardware. Guess it's my only reason. :)

Hey fizzle-187,

It is an Object of desire, no doubt about that. Some people (myself included) take notice of how a board looks while others laugh at us and don't give a fig about the way hardware looks as long as it performs! :p

There is nothing wrong with a beginner buying this board because they are in love with it heh but to some people it may be like buying a £100,000 sports car and mainly using it to drive down Tescos to do your weekly shopping! . . .you will look cool but your paying through the nose!

Just be careful of the whole e-Peen thing fizzle-187, that will take a good healthy bank balance and reduce it to an overdrawn mess, trust me!

You work hard for your money and you deserve the best but most of the LGA1156 boards costing over £100 are high quality bits of kit and will probably perform 90-95% as well as the top end ones, you just need to decide on an overall budget and try to stick with it as the manufacturers are well aware of people like you and will do their best to relive you of as much money ££££ as possible . . .the buggers! ;)

My only argument with this Big Wayne is that yes you are right in what you are saying but we all have to start somewhere, having one of the cheaper Motherboards can make the whole experience of overclocking a little daunting as they won't have many of the features that are needed.

With the maximus III you have as said that bling factor right away ( Extra cost of cheaper motherboard) but the main point with the Maximus III is the potential to overclock without any limits given CPU performance, the added touch with the ROG connect, having a netbook or another PC to hand will make overclocking so much easier as all overclocking can be done on another PC, all these things make life so much easier than trying to overclock a cheaper brand of board.

With the CPU you are looking at getting I would say 4gig will be a breeze with good air cooling, I had no problem at all with the 870 I tried and could get close to 4.3Gig stable and this was with the stock Intel heatsink so having better cooling will help a great deal.

Yeah I'm not saying only people with a degree in overclocking should buy this board but I've never seen sense in paying top dollar for something if your not gonna realise its potential, it's just my viewpoint and certainly not fact, call me frugal is you will, and being frugal is what started this whole overclocking scene off in the first place right? . . . . back in the day I always remember the best overclockers used the cheapest chips, we all loved to buy a £75 CPU and tweak it up to rival the performance of a £500 processor, we felt a bit smug that will got one over Intel . . .

Now it seems a whole new generation of overclockers have emerged who are happy to pay any cost to achieve a system speedup and compete with each other around the world, I get it but I don't wanna part with my hard earned cash in order to show a guy in Sweden or Japan I can create a faster computer than he can! :D

The other small problem here is nOObies see results from top overclockers like sacha35 and think if they pay out the several hundred pound on kit they too will be able to achieve similar results

5.0 Ghzzz ...... BLIMEY....I'm wondering if this is worth getting with a i7 860? I will be overclocking but it will be my first time. Any set pre-clocks in bios?
The most important thing in overclocking IMHO is Knowledge, Patience and having the right kit to do the job properly (in that order heh!)

No amount of spending on all the best kit in the world will ever be worth more than the knowledge . . . and that takes time,

ASUS MAXIMUS III Formula + nOOby = Good Clock

Midrange Motherboard + Gangster Overclocker = Better Overclock

ASUS MAXIMUS III Formula + Veteran Overclocker = Best uBer Overclock

In short the only point I am (rightly/wrongly) trying to make is . . . the knowledge on how to overclock is worth more than owning the best kit!

As there was no load on the CPU at this speed temps were low around the 47c, things did start to get a bit warm though when fully loading this CPU with the Intel stock heatsink around 4000MHz.

sacha35 i noticed you have done the oc on the Maximus III formula does this mean now there is a bios update that works with the oc station now on this board?

Yes mate i have the Bios and firmware for this system, it should be avalible very soon on the ASUS site.

I've got this motherboard now including my i7 860 and it's sexy! I'm looking to overclock it soon and I would need some advice on how to overclock.

It's my first system which I'm going to overclock as I'm new to the scene any cooments will appreciated.

hi,you not have a problem with the mb as it has a oc button, all you have to do is push that and you should geta auto stable oc of 3.6ghz.

Seriously? Is that all I have to do? Just shut down the system, open the plate up and click the OC button on the motherboard?

If so it's simplicity! and AWESOME!!!!

But, I would want to do it manually so I can LEARN and clock it higher to 4GHZ.
