Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

Launch partners at times. ;)

You want issues, try Asus+OCZ (not saying it will but its in the OCZ Forum Stickies).
installed 4gb of ocz reaper on my p5q dlx earlier and thankfully no issues. i had trouble before on asus nforce 4 boards with ocz which were resolved by changing the ram to corsair.

Big.Wayne, what processor do you have?

We have the same motherboardish & RAM, hoping you have same CPU so i know what to expect from overclocking :p

E8500 btw.

Oh currently an undervolted E6300! :D

[edit]

I did some overclocking though, hit 485MHz-FSB quite easily but couldn't go further? I have pretty much confirmed to myself its the chip having an FSB wall at that speed, a Wolfdale may go as high as 600MHz-FSB if your lucky, dunno about the Corsair though!

Ballistix PC2-6400 here. Watch out if you're planning on using this stuff, my board won't boot if I use the yellow slots. Black slots are fine, mine does DDR1060+ on 1.9V or less in those.

What CPU coolers are you guys using? I'm having major problems finding anything that will fit in a Wave Master case. I'm just waiting for the new Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme (supposed to be released at the end of August), but considering a couple of others such as Thermalright Ultima-90i or maybe SI-128 SE. I hate the Wave Master now. Great build quality, but at least three completely stupid design flaws. Anyone have a spare Lian Li V1010 kicking around? :)

Dee, are you under contract to use that case or something? If so can't you get a top lawyer involved and see if there is some kinda get-out clause? :p

I see a lot of posts like this, people not that happy with stuff for their own good reasons, but what I don't understand is why so much grumbling and very little action?

Dee, if something isn't to your liking it's probably better to do something about it rather than boiling to death slowly! :D

Look for a new case, take your time reading some reviews, have a peek in our very own OcUK Case Central and pick something good, something that will make u a bit happier! :)

Once you transfered your system across give your old case a good clean, take some pictures and sell it at auction etc. . .

Having just got the P5Q-E I'm having some CPU cooler problems when fitting my AC Freezer Pro 7

Initially the fins were touching the board radiators below the CPU socket but I managed to reseat it after an hour (several painful attempts and some lost skin later...)

Anyway then I fit the plastic fan bracket back on and the damn thing is touching the radiators and as far as I can tell there's no way to reseat it without it then touching the radiators on the opposite side, however it was late and I was hacked off so I may have jumped the gun.

In case I can't seat it without it touching something I'm thinking that the fact it's the plastic touching the radiator (not the fins of the cooler) it shouldn't be an issue? What do you think?

It'll be fine touching the boards heatsinks, providing it isn't putting too much pressure on them. Some people have cut away a piece of the AC F 7's plastic to make it fit better.

Thanks, I'll check again tonight but it was fairly easy to fit the fan back on the cooler once I'd seated it so I think the pressure on the board is not huge... although maybe I'll get my knife out anyway ;) Why I didn't think to cut the corner off I don't know lol!

Best way is to sand of the bottom corners of the fan shroud, the plastic is quite tough and hard to cut with a knife (also a chance the plastic may crack if cutting with a knife) i used a bit of p80 grade sandpaper on a flat surface and tested the fan on the heatsink a few times till i got it to fit right.

Wayne, it's very simple -- If I had the money to replace the Wave Master it would be long gone and I would have bought a Lian Li or something similar. The problem is, I don't have an income. I can't work due to illness and I refuse to claim benefits. To purchase the E8600 and P5Q-E I had to sell a ton of my hifi equipment and borrow money. The Wave Master was bought 4 years ago when I knew nothing about computers, I just thought it looked like a nice quality case that would last me for a long time. It is indeed nice quality, but the design is flawed by the fact that the airflow sucks and it's noisy because it uses 80mm fans. Also, I guess it wasn't designed for modular PSU's because there was a stupid lump of metal in the way of where the cables plug in. Because of that, I had to hack it up inside, and therefore I wouldn't be comfortable about selling it.

I'm not whining, I can live with it, but if I can't mention this to people on a computer forum without them thinking I'm too lazy to do something about it or I'm just grumbling, where the hell can I vent? It's frustrating to have a brand new E8600 and not be able to cool it properly because nothing fits in this so-called "masterpiece" of case design!

Again, if I had money, it would have been replaced and I wouldn't be writing this.

OK, back to the topic...

Dee I'm sorry to hear about your poor health but really you should be trying to take a calmer and happier approach to your hobby, it would do you good instead of getting yourself all twisted up over the most smallest problems. I understand why you purchased an E8600 as I want one too (they are desirable!) but in actual fact they are waaaay to expensive at this point in time and you really should have considered the larger picture of your build.

You have obviously made a simple mistake in your purchasing, regretable but its something you can remedy quite easily. If you want to be happier then you can, if you want to grumble away feel free but be prepared for your fellow forum posters to chime in with observations and suggestions to get you back on track! :D

Wayne, it seems to me you're the one getting twisted up about small details. I am a very calm person! I think you're taking me a bit too seriously. ;)

Im going to complain about the both of you soon! :p

My deluxe arrives on tuesday by the way, expect tons of stupid questions around then
i look forward to hearing any questions about the p5q dlx as well, currently running my q6600 at 3.4 on the dlx p5q, any input from other users is much appreciated:)
