Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

Hmmm is there any point to get anything but PC2-6400 RAM with this board? Getting an e5200 and then an E0 8400 or E0 Q9550 later...

For some reason Ive got my heart set on some OCZ Reaper :)

Whats wrong with getting above 6400 ram?

Also:

After some massive faffing with the mobo I finally got 4.2Ghz stable at 1.42-1.43V (LOAD), happy with that, also passed memtest 8 hours 40 mins out of windows. runs toasty, 65 with case open, 73 with it shut, but hoping these AC Ryan fans I ordered will help cool it abit.

Ages ago Asus mobos (NF4) just didnt seem to like OCZ mem - doubt any issues now, just checking though :p...

Setter - just saw your spec - you wouldnt be using a TRUE at all? Just seeing if the Reaper RAM fouls the TRUE due to the heatpipes...

Cheers mate - thats perfect - now Im contemplating setting up the TRUE with 2 38mm fans in push-pull config at 5/7Vs - seems I have a lot of clearance ;)

Would be a makeshift BTX air tunnel :p

Give us your exact system spec and your VID is the same as mine. :)

EDIT:

These are my settings, I think :)
VDimm at 1.8 (this depends on your RAM)
vFSB at 1.22
vPLL at 1.52
vNB at 1.12

Basically the last 3 are set to the second setting past Auto

Q6600 TR120U + akasa amber fan
Asus P5Q-E
Leadtek GTX280
4gb Geil black dragon DDR2 800
X-FI Extreme Music
Corsair TX750
Samsung F1 640gb
Windows Vista 64

I set:

Vcore to 1.3v
FSB term to 1.3
CPU PLL to 1.52
NB to 1.3

I would have thought it would at least get into windows with these settings even if it wasnt prime stable.

I've finally decided on a spec!

P5Q Pro (With Ket's BIOS)
Intel E5200
G.Skill PK PC2-8500C5
2x WD RE3 250GB in Raid0

Should be a good step up compared to my last system. :)

I'm interested to see what the E5200 can do. Should be a good chip. I would go for the P5Q-E board, though. It's only about £10 more.

Waiting on my P5Q Deluxe coming, had a gander on ASUS' webby and theres quite a few BIOS revisions, as well as matrix and marvell raid drivers etc.

What ones do you lot suggest i go for? I assume i should use the latest for RAID when installing vista etc and not bother with the supplied drivers?

Download everything from the Asus site. Don't even think about the included drivers CD! I had loads of problems with Asus drivers when using them from a CD on a Q6600 system I built for a friend. They would take ages to install, then I couldn't boot into Windows afterwards. Awful drivers.

Ah ok cheers, although slightly confused as to whether its the "Intel matrix" i use or the Marvell? If intel would i be better getting the latest from Intel direct?

Well after getting my P5Q-E and E8400 I wanted to try my hand at overclocking but I seem to have done something wrong, any ideas?

Thanks!

In addition to my confusion over what sata drivers i use whilst installing vista (marvell or intel?). Also do i go for the drivers etc from Intels website direct or the ones ASUS have listed?. What bios revision should i update to? Im assuming you don't need to do one after the other, the newest one contains all previous changes/updates/fixes etc?

If you're installing Vista onto RAID on the Intel controller then you won't need to load drivers. Vista has the Intel RAID drivers built in. Then you can install the latest Intel Matrix drivers direct from Intel once Vista is installed.

I'm not sure which BIOS is the best atm, but yes you can go direct to the newest without having to flash the ones in-between.

Yeah i was told that Vista has inbuilt Intel drivers, although i thought it'd be best to use whatever ones Asus/Intel had listed or is there only one version anyway of them anyway?

Ah cool, cheers

The newest RAID drivers will be on the Intel website and you can load them during the installation if you want. But it's wise to install the Intel Matrix software after Vista is installed and it contains the latest drivers anyway.

Ah i see, i was going to be putting the latest (from intel) raid drivers on at the time of install then installing the matrix storage manager once in Vista. So going by what you're saying ill be safe to do that anyways?
