Asus P5Q-E (P45) Motherboard Review

Yeah maybe although it had been running for a week with multiple restarts (install, patch, reboot etc etc) without me fiddling with the Bios settings so I'm not convinced that was the reason although I be more than happy if that's all it was ;)

On certain settings when I press the reset button, exit BIOS and restart windows the PC always turns off and back on, sometimes to say overclock failed.

It is always the case that a computer can be stable in Windows, pass hours of prime etc but if the clock is really ragged-edge stuff there is always the chance for something to go wrong during POST and bootup.

Because of similar errors in the past I always do a few start-up, shut-down and S3 standby tests on top of the normal windows stuff to really make sure the system is happy.

In the past when greeted with the failed-overclock POST screen it seemed to be mostly caused by too aggresive memory settings (frequency, timings, tweaks etc).

I don't think I'll try S3, I wont be surprised if it does not work, did not on my P35, P45 Plat so why would it on this..

I would expect S3 would work just fine Will! :)

The only time I had an issue with S3 Standby was due to an older hard-drive (can't remember brand? IBM I think?) but when I swapped out the old disk for a new Samsung everything worked fine.

Just tried 400 * 8 again with 1.3v this time and its still not having any of it. It posts and loads windows but then freezes on the desktop and i have to reset the PC.

If i go any lower than 400 it means i have to under clock the ram or overclock it too much as i don't think this ram will do DDR 917 which is the next one up.

I set DRAM static read control to disabled and load line calibration to enabled would these be best left to auto?

Also speed step is enabled could this be something to do with it? Ive managed to get to 3ghz 3 hours prime stable without issues though.

What voltages is your NB at, FSB term?

Tried messing with GRL Ref?

Currently running my q6600 @3393mhz (9x337) would i be better dropping the multi to 8x, my memory is 800mhz ocz reaper running a 1.1 ratio, 754mhz. 4, 4,4,15. 2.02 volts. The system has passed 8 hours prime95 small fft at theese settings. Ideally looking to get to 3.6ghz eventually.

Raise FSB Term to 1.26-1.3 and same for NB and try again.

Ok just tried 1.3 on the CPU, NB and FSB term and still did the same :(.

CPU PLL was set to 1.52v btw

what would a safe voltage be for the cpu?, my temps arnt going above 55oc full load at the moment on 1.26v. I have a TR120U cpu cooler in an Akasa eclipse.

Could it just be that the CPU doesn't have enough volts then?

Would it be worth trying to get 3.2 with a 9x multi and just keep notching it up? Does the lower FSB really make that much difference?

Thanks for the help on this guys, if i can get 3.2 I'll be happy (for now :D).

Load up coretemp and it will give you the vid.

Core temp is reporting it as 1.2625.

I've finally decided on a spec!

P5Q Pro (With Ket's BIOS)
Intel E5200
G.Skill PK PC2-8500C5
2x WD RE3 250GB in Raid0

Should be a good step up compared to my last system. :)

Waiting on my P5Q Deluxe coming, had a gander on ASUS' webby and theres quite a few BIOS revisions, as well as matrix and marvell raid drivers etc.

What ones do you lot suggest i go for? I assume i should use the latest for RAID when installing vista etc and not bother with the supplied drivers?

Just tried 400 * 8 with ram at DDR 800 and it froze in windows :(. Volts were at 1.26 would i need more than this for 3.2?

All depends mainly on the cpu. I can run 3.2 on mine with 1.218V in bios. Now running 3.6 with 1.35V in bios. You just have to test for each individual chip.

Try a vCore of 1.31 and see what happens, make sure for the time being that your RAM is not being overclocked just to eliminate it as a cause of the problem for now.

Give us your exact system spec and your VID is the same as mine. :)

EDIT:

These are my settings, I think :)
VDimm at 1.8 (this depends on your RAM)
vFSB at 1.22
vPLL at 1.52
vNB at 1.12

Basically the last 3 are set to the second setting past Auto
