Asus ROG Ally

So new owners of the ALLY X are you also having issues with clicking sounds on the controls or squeaking like in these videos and rattling sounds when the device is moved, like loose parts inside, seems poor quality control from ASUS again... REDDIT seems full of these issues with the new ALLY X too..

Nope nothing on mine it’s been great so far.

I've owned the X for a couple of weeks, and just like all the reviews say (shocking I know) all the small improvements have made a massive difference to how great it is to own and play games on the X.

Even with the same chipset, the X runs games faster, smoother and cooler, therefore quieter than the original.

Probably not mentioned much is the sound of the fans when they are running faster, they now have a pitch that is no where near as intrusive when your gaming at higher Watts. It's hard to describe but if you're sat on the sofa running a demanding game, you don't bother other people in the same room due to the fans spinning faster. Something I was conscious of with the original.

The thumbsticks now feel a lot more precise with a weighty feel to them, which are great to use. And after having issues with the originals stick drift/accuracy, these are now very accurate to play with.

The left and right shoulder buttons took a while to get used to, as they feel like they have changed size somehow, but they both click with a positive feel. And the rear buttons are just fine, though I didn't have issue with the originals back buttons.

I don't feel any noticeable difference to the XYAB buttons, they just feel like the old ones. Which is perfectly fine.

The D pad, is a different story. That feels great now, with a quality 'heavy' feel to it that when you press, it clicks nice and solid without feeling or sounding 'clicky' and rotating it round with your thumb feels very positive and nice to use. A big improvement, the best I've come across in a controller.

And of course there's the 80Wh battery... What a massive game changing quality of life upgrade this is.. Playing high Watt AAA games for a couple of hours is amazing, this is proper portable handheld gaming as it should be, my Anker 140W power bank barely gets a look in now, and I don't miss being tethered to it by usb :D
The Ally X will do 100W fast charging, although my tests showed 78W but that's fast enough for me, to be topped back up without waiting ages.

Overall build quality feels excellent to me, it's a very sturdy solid device although as mentioned above it's not perfect. It's not quite Apple level yet :D The RH trigger on mine did start to quietly squeak when I was playing some trigger bashing game, so after a quick Google, I opened her up, and dabbed a small amount of silicone grease on both trigger springs..easy fix :)

Upgrading to a larger SSD, was super easy apart from trying to pry the two halves of the X away from each other, the pesky clips are really quite secure, and it took a bit of patience to not risk breaking anything.

This is a fantastic handheld, not cheap, but Black Friday/Monday. ..Tuesday or whatever it is nowadays isn't far away, so there might be some offers on, because it does need to come down in price, then it will sell like hot cakes. Although I have checked a few times and it has been out of stock several times at the purple place, so it must be selling well.

Would you recommend upgrading from the original ROG Ally?
I just cant be arsed with porting everything over...

The more I use the X, the more I love it. With no niggles nagging in the back ground you find yourself picking it up and playing it, exactly for what it's intended for. So...

My gut feeling is the X should be cheaper, to be more accessible to more people.

But the longer I've owned it, the happier I am paying the premium to own it. With the original Ally dropping in price, the financial jump up is now higher, but that's still worth it for me personally having now owned one.

And yeah porting stuff over will be a pain, as you can't do a clone. But if you have a caddy, then game files can be moved, depends whether that's faster than your internet connection.

My upgrade path was done through Curry's care plan scheme, and the 7 day guaranteed turnaround. The staff advised me at the time they cannot meet that target, that would entitle you to a 'write off' that reimburses you the value of the Ally (new) which was a higher value than the second hand resale amount, and therefore an easier pill to swallow for the upgrade to the X. So I had nothing to lose, and yeah after 8 days I got a refund.

Definitely worth the £3/month insurance :D and I would certainly look into that if you can, as I do believe, if you bought from them you have up to the first 12 months to buy a policy.

Thanks for the explanation, you kinda justified it in a way that I probably would have done so as well :)

Its just a friggin PITA to port all my games, especially my emulator games and settings as well.

I may wait for the next ROG iteration, honestly I had hoped the screen would be an 8" screen (similar to the Legion Go).

I just bought a cheap portable 15” monitor that has a stand. It means I can now use my Ally X for general PC stuff too. I think the X is a fantastic device personally.

Just pre-ordered the Skull & Co Grip case for the Ally X. Fingers crossed its half decent.

There's been a definite lack of cases for the X up to now, and after waiting a month for a case to turn up from China (Amazon order), I was very disappointed with how badly it fitted, totally sloppy around the top edges and interfered with the top buttons. Instant refund, and they told me to not even bother sending it back...

Oddly enough I've just seen a couple of videos for the new ModCase from JSaux, and it looks to be just as baggy/ill fitted around the top edge also. Not sure whats going off there :(

Considering getting this to get me back into my peaceful gaming zone around two children. Thinking I might pick up and play on the go more than I currently do. Are these only really good for action / fps games or do they still work well for slower type strategy games like civilization or two point hospital?

They work well for any game that controller works for, if a game you think is only worth playing with mouse and kb the no, unless you connect one, however you might be able to map mouse / kb in game keys to the controller to get non controller games to work, Armoury crate has it built in alternatively you can buy ReWASD, steam also has built in support but I’ve always had problems with steam controller support for some reason

The Skull&Co case finally turned up today and I'm very happy with it.

The fit is perfect, a good mix of firm yet flexible plastic that holds well around the Ally X. The top and bottom lips hug over the screen protector quite nicely, so not in a position to 'interfere' with the protector, which was a concern I'd had. So really glad that's not an issue.

The rear has plenty of space to not obstruct any ventilation holes, and it's nice to now have the rear buttons feel recessed. The top cutouts are accurately placed, so a good quality fit around the openings.

It could do with a stand, but I can live without that

:)

One flaw I’ve found today with the Ally (Windows) is that if my internet goes down as it has today, it will not allow me to play certain games if they’ve not been launched in a while or not at all.

Rather frustrating really. I have a 4 hour flight to Bulgaria in a few weeks so no idea how I can ensure that I can freely play my games whilst on the flight.

In two minds to go back to the Switch OLED as my primary handheld!

Bought an Ally from CEX.
Joy sticks didn't work...
Then it died the next day. No power, No charge.

Looks like its been opened by them previously. Sooooo I bet they didn't connect the joy sticks lol

Back to CEX it goes!
